Küçükköy: Alafaradın Kilims, Pears and Natural Finds
Accommodation in Küçükköy
In Küçükköy, women weave Alafaradın kilims on wooden looms called “Istar.” These kilims are made in Küçükköy and Büyükköy in the Korkuteli district of Antalya Province. Alafaradın kilims are handwoven kirkit textiles.
Sheep’s wool is used for the warp and weft, along with natural dyes. Warp and weft are the two thread systems in a woven fabric; their interlacing offers a simple explanation of the craft’s construction. The main colours of Alafaradın kilims are green, red, black and blue. Anyone interested in textile design can understand the kilim through its materials, technique and colour.
Craft and local tradition
According to local tradition, Küçükköy is associated with Alifahrettini Sağir, and a tomb attributed to him is said to be located there. This story adds a local historical connection to the craft tradition.
Pears and pistachios: two product stories
Among the region’s products, the Korkuteli Karyağdı pear is a notable point of reference. It has been grown in Küçükköy since the 1950s and received a geographical indication in 2018. It is considered typical of the wider Korkuteli area. A 2021 description highlights its long shelf life, distinctive taste and aroma, low granularity and high fibre content. It also notes its seasonal cycle: the pear blossoms in early April and, after the necessary care and treatment, is ready for harvest in the first days of October. This brings together a long cultivation history and a clearly defined seasonal rhythm.
A second product story concerns the Antep pistachio, adapted to Antalya and given the name “Toros fıstığı.” A 2024 media report names Küçükköy as the site of the first harvest; the harvest was presented to Özgür Özel, the then-chairman of the CHP. While the pear is associated with cultivation dating back to the 1950s and a geographical indication, the pistachio represents the specific event of its first harvest and naming.
Natural finds with precise locations
A study published in 2021 reports that Polyporus squamosus was found in 2014 at Tekneli Deresi on the Küçükköy Yaylası, at an elevation of 1,619 metres. Rhizopogon luteolus was observed in 2014 in Küçükköy Ormanı at an elevation of 1,132 metres; locally, the fungus is called the domalan mushroom. The two records differ in both location and elevation. For nature enthusiasts, they add specific species names and named locations to the stories of local crafts and products.
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Küçükköy, these themes can help shape your trip: textile traditions, regional products or nature. The pear offers a seasonal perspective on the region, the kilims a cultural theme, and the mushroom observations two named natural sites.
