Kemalpaşa can be discovered through very different traces of the past: the remains of Nif Castle stand on a commanding hill in the town centre, while paths wind through a valley in the Kemalpaşa-Dere Recreation Area. There is also a historic hammam, a mosque with a reference to the town’s history, and festivals celebrating cherry and glass culture. This lets you choose your own focus for your trip, whether history, nature or local traditions.

Nif Castle and traces from different eras

Nif Castle is in the centre of Kemalpaşa, on a commanding hill. Its surviving remains belong to a Byzantine castle built in the 12th or 13th century. Black-glazed pottery dating to the 4th century BC has also been found on the site. These finds date from long before the Byzantine castle and make the site interesting for travellers curious about the area’s long history.

Another historical landmark is the Laskaris Palace, also known as Kız Kulesi. The building, constructed in the Byzantine era, was built by Theodoros Laskaris II. The palace is clearly visible from the entrance to Kemalpaşa. The castle and palace are distinct historical sites; together, they invite you to notice the different eras associated with Kemalpaşa as you explore.

Hammam and town history

Eski Hamam, also known as Çarşı Hamamı, is in central Kemalpaşa, in the Atatürk neighbourhood, in the Hamamönü area on 11. Sokak. The building was restored after falling into disrepair while surrounded by houses. It is thought to be one of the two baths Evliya Çelebi mentions in his account of Nif (Kemalpaşa). This cautious attribution is part of its history: it makes the hammam an interesting stop for anyone exploring the town’s historical traditions.

The Çarşı Camii also offers a specific reference to the past. An inscription on the gate indicates that Kemalpaşa suffered a major fire in 1890. The inscription connects a place now in the central built-up area with a defining event in the town’s history, without requiring any further historical details.

Cherry festival and glass art

The Kemalpaşa Golden Cherry Culture and Art Festival has been held every year since 1936, in the last week of May or the first week of June. The Kemalpaşa Golden Cherry Festival takes place in the amphitheatre at Dere Mesire Yeri Recreation Area in the town centre. If you would like to plan your trip around cultural events, this recurring date is a distinctive part of the local festival calendar.

Nearby Nazarköy has a different tradition at its heart: since 1950, numerous glass ornaments and nazar boncuğu, the so-called lucky-eye beads, have been made in workshops at the foot of Nif Dağı. The village is known for its bead furnaces. The annual Nazarköy Boncuk Festival complements this tradition with exhibitions of various kinds of glass beads and concerts. The two festivals therefore have different focuses: in Kemalpaşa, the emphasis is on cherries, culture and art; in Nazarköy, it is on glass beads and music.

Trails and nature in the Dere Recreation Area

In the Kemalpaşa-Dere Recreation Area, trails wind through the valley, offering opportunities for hiking. As you walk, you can spot various bird and mammal species. These include the great tit, masked shrike, goshawk and sparrowhawk, as well as the stone marten, wild boar and fox. If you enjoy spending time outdoors and observing wildlife carefully, this offers a different focus from the historic buildings in town.

The recreation area also has picnic spots, cafés and a municipal social facility. The combination of valley trails and these amenities shapes the character of the area. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would rather spend your time at the historic sites in the centre, on the trails and in nature, or at cultural events; these interests can help guide your search for a holiday rental in Kemalpaşa. Nearby Nazarköy is another place to explore if you are interested in glass bead-making.
