Kartepe: Experience Skiing, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Kartepe
Kartepe combines skiing with nature experiences, viewpoints and cultural sites. The destinations are spread across different places in the municipal area, including Derbent, Maşukiye, Karatepe, Uzuntarla and Eşme. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth considering not only the name Kartepe but also the specific location. This lets you decide whether to focus on skiing, lakeside trails, nature or history.
Skiing and nature around Kuzuyayla
The Kartepe Ski Centre is located at an altitude of 1,602 metres. Its facilities include four mechanical ski lifts, 42 kilometres of ski terrain and 14 slopes. In addition to skiing, snowboarding, Big Foot, snowmobiling, hiking and ATV riding are also possible activities there. As the facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest operating and slope information before your trip.
Another connection to the natural area is the 4.7-kilometre Kartepe cable car. It starts at Derbent Station and ends at Kuzuyayla Nature Park; the cable car is complete and in operation. Check the timetable before your ride. In the Kartepe district, near Maşukiye and Derbent, Kuzuyayla offers opportunities for day hikes, photography, wildlife watching and cycling. The nature park is also known for its diverse vegetation, including beech, rhododendron, chestnut, hornbeam and oak. It offers views of Lake Sapanca. Country restaurants and picnic areas are also available; check in advance whether the restaurants are currently open.
Lake views, picnic areas and trails
Other places in the municipal area have their own highlights. Suadiye Nature Park, also known as Eğreltidüzü, offers opportunities for day picnics, walks and cycling, as well as a viewing terrace. Festivals are held every year at Eğreltidüzü Yaylası; check the dates for your year of travel. In Uzuntarla, viewpoints offer views of Lake Sapanca, the Gulf of İzmit and the Samanlı Mountains. The village of Ketenciler near Uzuntarla is home to two reservoirs and oak forests; oak forest and picnic areas can also be found north of Acısu.

History, events and regional cuisine
The Hikmetiye Mosque stands in Derbent. Sultan Abdülhamit II had it built in 1899 after the death of Habibe Hanım. In 1982, the mosque was registered and placed under protection by the relevant heritage conservation authority. In Karatepe, a monument commemorates Thököly Imre. It plays an important role in tourism and Turkish-Hungarian friendship and attracts Hungarian visitors in particular. A path dedicated to Thököly Imre begins at a fountain in Karatepe village and follows an old mountain trail to the summit of Kartepe.
Events are also part of the region's character: in Sarımeşe, the Hergeleci İbrahim Yağlı Güreşleri, along with cultural, artistic and sporting events, are traditionally held in the second week of July. As dates may change, check the schedule for your planned year of travel. The history of Köseköy dates back to the 17th century. Finds and graves from the Roman and Byzantine periods have also been discovered there during excavations.
Local specialities add another dimension to the excursions. In the Alabalık Valley near Maşukiye, fish restaurants line both sides of the valley. Maşukiye specialities include trout cooked on tiles, baked mushrooms and village cheese made in a clay pot. Restaurant availability and menus may change. Eşme quinces are grown by the local population and used to make quince cezerye. Previously, they were used to make quince jam.
