Sındırgı: Yağcıbedir Culture and Handicrafts
Accommodation in Sındırgı
Sındırgı is shaped by the Yağcıbedir carpet tradition, craft workshops and historic sites in the town centre. Nearby thermal springs and hiking trails farther afield add to the appeal. When choosing a holiday rental, consider whether you mainly want to explore the town’s culture and history or also visit places outside the centre.
Yağcıbedir Festival and Living Traditions
Every year in the first week of September, Sındırgı hosts the International Yağcıbedir Festival, celebrating carpet, cultural and artistic traditions. The programme includes carpet-weaving competitions, traditional wrestling matches and performances by folk dance groups. The festival takes place at Cumhuriyet Square, Şerif Paşa Square and Kocahan. If you want to make these traditions the focus of your trip, you can plan around the annual festival dates.
Beyond the festival, the workshops offer a glimpse into local craft traditions. At the 1,400-square-metre Akpınar Yaşam Merkezi in the town centre, women work in workshops for crafts including newspaper weaving, filography, etamin embroidery, Yörük dolls, sewing and embroidery, and Yağcıbedir carpet weaving. Visitors can also eat regional dishes and buy souvenirs there. The centre brings together crafts, regional cuisine and keepsakes in one place.
Historic Sites in the Town Centre
The town centre’s historic and architectural highlights include Şerifpaşa Camisi, Tarihi Kemer Köprüsü and Yağlı Güreş Müze Evi. Şerif Paşa Camii was built on the site where present-day Sındırgı is located. Kocahan Hamam was also built nearby. These connections make the mosque and hamam points of interest for travellers curious about the town’s historical development.
Another bathhouse, Tarihi Şehir Hamamı, is located at Şerifpaşa Square. Restoration projects for this bathhouse and the old Greek house opposite it are ongoing. Its architectural history is therefore also evident in the restoration work currently under way. Wood-burning art and pottery workshops are also listed among the town centre’s historic and architectural highlights for visitors.
In the associated municipality, the Bilge Seramik ve Sanat studio continues a pottery tradition dating back to the Hittite period. Visitors can learn about Yağcıbedir motifs on pottery and the culture behind them. Those especially interested in ceramics can explore this connection to pottery traditions in the municipality as well as the workshops in the town centre.
