Burhaniye offers a range of cultural points of interest: a city archive in a listed konak, a cultural museum with archaeological and ethnographic sections, a Kuva-yı-Milliye monument at the town entrance, and a hammam with a clearly described architectural design. If you would like to include some history in your stay, alongside exploring the town, you can choose from these different themes. The municipal theatre adds to the cultural picture with performances and theatre workshops offered in previous seasons.

Archive and Museum: Exploring Burhaniye’s History

Burhaniye’s city archive is located in the listed Pazarbaşı Konağı at 21 Kavakdibi Caddesi, Hacıahmet Mahallesi. It is open to visitors free of charge on weekdays from 08:30 to 17:30. The archive preserves and digitizes documents, photographs, maps, written records, visual materials and archival collections from Burhaniye. Its remit also includes preserving and passing on the town’s cultural heritage. For those interested in local history, it offers both a specific place to visit and the opportunity to explore different kinds of historical records.

The Burhaniye Kuva-yı-Milliye Cultural Museum has archaeological and ethnographic sections. The building was first used in the 18th century. The Burhaniye Kuva-yı-Milliye Museum displays archaeological finds from an ancient city. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in material traces of the past, Burhaniye’s cultural heritage, or both.

A Monument at the Town Entrance and a Historic Hammam

The Kuva-yı-Milliye monument is located at the entrance to Burhaniye and was created by sculptor Tankut Öktem. The monument, created by Prof. Dr. Tankut Öktem, was erected in three sections in 2008. It embodies the spirit of the National War of Independence. Its artist, year of creation and division into three sections make the monument a distinct subject within the town’s history; its location at the town entrance also provides a clear geographical reference point in Burhaniye.

Another historic building is the hammam in Koca Cami Mahallesi on Kavak-Dibi Street. Its rectangular plan is oriented east–west and measures 17.29 × 12.50 metres. It is estimated to date from the late 15th century. This assessment is based on the presumed start of the development of today’s Burhaniye settlement after 1483, as well as comparisons with similar buildings. The date is therefore an estimate, not an exact year of construction. For a cultural and historical perspective on Burhaniye, the focus here is on the building’s layout and its cautiously estimated date.

Theatre and Workshops

Burhaniye Municipality’s city theatre staged a total of 62 performances in the 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 seasons, reaching around 23,000 spectators. These figures relate specifically to those two seasons. The theatre also offered workshops for children’s, youth and adult groups aged 8 to 45. During the season, 137 participants worked at the Ahmet-Akın Cultural Centre at least six days a week, during the day and in the evening.

If you would like to include destinations beyond Burhaniye in your search, you can also consider Karaağaç, Ocaklar Municipality, Saraylar, Yıldız Village, Hıdırköy Village, Balıkesir, Çelebiler Village and Avşa.
