Kosai, in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture, brings together Lake Hamana and a history of transport, industry, and the coast. Choose a holiday apartment based on your intended destination: the Arai Barrier, Toyota Museum, and lakeshore are separate stops.

The Arai Barrier and Transport History

The Arai Barrier, also known as the Imagiri Barrier, was established in 1600 at the ferry landing of the time and was relocated or rebuilt after storm and tsunami damage. The surviving building is considered the only barrier building in Japan preserved without alteration; it was designated a historic site in 1921 and a special historic site in 1955. The adjoining Sekisho Museum displays materials on the barrier and the history of roads and transport. The museum and historic site make for a specific cultural visit; check current opening hours and admission fees.

Lake Hamana and Other Museums

At Imagiriguchi, Lake Hamana meets the Pacific Ocean. The Kaikokan offers water-related educational activities and, according to its description, barbecue facilities and bicycle rentals. Seasonal activities such as eel or fish catching, and a winter oyster hut, are time-dependent; check whether they are currently available. The Toyota Sakichi Memorial Museum displays looms and mementos related to his birthplace. The Utsuyama Castle ruins sit on a 51-meter-high ridge and offer views of Lake Hamana. Check access and routes separately for both destinations.

Nature and Holiday Accommodation

The Kosai Mountains run along the western edge of Kosai, with trekking and trail-running routes along the prefectural border. An active day there calls for a different location and equipment than a museum visit. Compare any holiday apartment on offer by its exact address, price, and amenities. Being close to the lake does not guarantee a lake view or a beach for swimming. To the prefecture: Shizuoka.
