Karangpandan can be explored through two specific places: the Kampung Kuliner Klatak Karangpandan tourist village on the slopes of Mount Lawu and the Pendopo Kawedanan Karangpandan. Klatak brings the mountain scenery into focus, while the Pendopo offers a cultural point of interest. Together, the two places give you an impression of the different themes you can expect in Karangpandan.

Klatak on the slopes of Lawu and regional souvenirs

Kampung Kuliner Klatak Karangpandan is located on the slopes of Mount Lawu. Tahu kempong and Jadah Blondo are considered typical souvenirs from the tourist village. These two names add a local connection to the landscape and are worth keeping in mind when planning your trip.

The Pendopo Kawedanan Karangpandan is a heritage building classified at the regency level. This classification offers a different way to connect with the area than Klatak’s hillside setting: here, the focus is on a named heritage site. The Pendopo can therefore be considered a cultural theme alongside the landscape.

Heritage in the wider destination of Karanganyar

If you look beyond Karangpandan, the wider destination of Karanganyar offers further historical and cultural themes. Candi Cetho is a Hindu temple and a place of worship. It is located in the village of Gumeng, Kecamatan Jenawi, in a forest on the slopes of Mount Lawu, surrounded by green highland scenery. Its 13 tiered terraces symbolise the human journey through life, from sinfulness to Moksha.

Candi Sukuh, also in Karanganyar, is a Hindu temple built around the 15th century. Its architecture is reminiscent of the Mayan pyramids of America, and its reliefs tell of the complexity of human life. Candi Cetho and Candi Sukuh thus offer different points of interest for exploring temple architecture: at Cetho, the focus is on the tiered terraces and their religious significance; at Sukuh, it is on the architectural comparison and the stories told by the reliefs.

Waterfalls and scenery in Karanganyar

Waterfalls are also among the attractions in the wider destination of Karanganyar. Grojogan Sewu is approximately 81 metres high. Jumog reaches approximately 30 metres and is fed by natural mountain springs. Jumog’s water flows into the three branches of Klueng, Kusumajati and Jubleg; a bridge in front of the waterfall is a popular photo spot for visitors. Parang Ijo is an 80-metre-high waterfall in Munggur, Girimulyo, Kecamatan Ngargoyoso. Visitors can enjoy the mountain water there in the stream or directly beneath the waterfall.

The heights give you a concrete comparison between the waterfalls: Grojogan Sewu and Parang Ijo are around 80 metres high, while Jumog is approximately 30 metres high. At Jumog, the named water branches and the bridge add further distinctive details. If you are more interested in the surroundings than in waterfalls, Karanganyar also offers Candi Cetho in the forest on the slopes of Mount Lawu, an example of the destination’s green highland scenery.

Sondokoro offers a different focus: this historical attraction is known against the backdrop of the former Tasikmadu Dutch colonial-era sugar factory and offers a ride on a steam train around the former sugar factory. Sapta Tirta Pablengan combines a historical connection to the era of Mangkunegaran rule with a natural feature: it has seven natural springs, each with a different taste. Karanganyar is also home to Intanpari Park, a water attraction on Jl. Jend. Gatot Subroto in Beningrejo, Gaum.
