Across the wider Jining region, themes such as Li Bai’s life, the history of the Grand Canal, landscapes and cuisine come together. The different highlights can help you plan your trip: would you like to focus on cultural history, are you especially interested in nature, or would you like to discover regional dishes? This choice may also shape your search for a holiday rental.

Li Bai and the history of the Grand Canal

The Li Bai Memorial Museum in Jining was founded in 1986. It is a state-run, second-class museum with a heritage-protection function, located on the north bank of the Old Grand Canal in the old town. The museum covers 6,000 square metres; its main building, Taibai Tower, has a floor area of more than 700 square metres. The permanent exhibition covers Li Bai’s life and time in Jining, his relationship with Du Fu, the history of Taibai Tower, and Li Bai’s literature and its study. Before visiting, check which parts of the permanent exhibition are currently on display.

Huanbi Spring is also associated with Li Bai: during his extended stay in Jining, he wrote poems there and washed his brush there, which gave the site its name. In December 2013, it was designated a nationally protected cultural heritage site of particular importance. It officially opened to the public free of charge on 18 May 2022; this date does not indicate current access arrangements.

The Jining Museum has five permanent exhibitions devoted to the origins of Jining, Zou-Lu culture, Confucian and Shuihu culture, stone inscriptions, the Grand Canal, historical sites and present-day Jining. Check which exhibitions are currently on view before your visit. In December 2024, the Taibai Tower immersive performance “又见太白” was described as a regular production. Poetry recitation, sword dancing and encounters feature in the show, which tells stories about Li Bai, among other things. If you would like to plan your visit around the performance, check the current schedule.

Archaeological discoveries and historic waterways

The archaeological park at the site of the River Governor’s Office in Rencheng District consists of an exhibition hall, a cultural plaza and a preservation and presentation area. In December 2025, the park was included in Shandong Province’s third list of archaeological parks. The exhibition hall, as described in 2025, is divided into six sections covering the history of the highest-level government authority responsible for waterways during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The preservation and presentation area, also described at that time, features reconstructions of archaeologically excavated gates, the central courtyard road, paths, a passage room and the main hall.

A 2021 report described a water route of around 2.1 kilometres for the “運河記憶” project, running from Dongdasi to Huitong Bridge, with 15 attractions along the way. The same report mentioned light shows and performances of Huagu, Yu opera and Huangmei opera along the route. These details reflect reporting at the time; if you would like to include events in your plans, check the current schedule.

Taibai Lake, Nanchi and regional cuisine

The Taibai Lake scenic area combines sightseeing and recreation with wetland conservation and water purification. An ecological account from 2022 mentions more than 80 fish species, over 130 bird species and more than 300 species of plankton and aquatic plants. For cultural and historical impressions, there is also Nanchi: today, Nanchi is a classical landscape garden that preserves historical culture and brings together canal, Shaoling and Wangmu folk cultures.

Nanchi’s twelve scenic spots include the Wangmu Pavilion, the Shaoling Shrine, the Old Nanchi Gate, the Stele Gallery and the Qiao Yu Art Museum. This selection shows how the garden brings its different cultural themes to life. When planning your visit, you can choose a different focus from the exhibitions on Li Bai or the history of the waterways.

A food map for Jining helps visitors and residents find snacks and classic dishes. Examples include Sinta soup and a Confucius banquet. The map offers a starting point for exploring local cuisine; individual details may change.
