Tatawin is shaped by striking ridges, ksour and a landscape where settlement history meets geological history. At Ksar Ouled Soltane, the interplay between the structure and the terrain is particularly easy to see; Chenini and Guermessa offer different highlights with their elevated locations, cave dwellings and geological formations.

Ksar, Cuesta and Geological History

Ksar Ouled Soltane is a mountain ksar on Djebel Abiadh. It lies in a cuesta landscape above a valley shaped by jessour terraces. Geological history is also part of this landscape: the area has rich and varied Middle and Upper Jurassic fossils of scientific and educational significance. The site thus combines a specific structure with a valley whose geological past stretches far back in time.

Near Chenini, the elevations reach 550 metres and rise about 250 metres above the El Ferch plain. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views across the plain. The elevation and difference in height make the contrast between the ridges and the lower-lying landscape tangible.

Chenini and Guermessa: Settlements and Cultural Heritage

At least three rows of cave dwellings lie beneath a ksar citadel on the southern slope of the Chenini spur. The buildings face towards the El Ferch plain. Chenini is partly inhabited by a Berber-speaking population.

Guermessa’s cultural heritage includes a galaa, a ksar, a mosque, an oil mill, cave dwellings and necropolises. The site has been abandoned and is threatened by ongoing deterioration. The landscape is also remarkable: Guermessa features a double cuesta with a scarp, a hill and a foothill. Its landforms are of educational interest for geomorphological and sedimentological studies.

Oued Dekouk: Wetland and Protected Area

The Oued Dekouk valley is surrounded by sand dunes and forms a wetland with diverse fauna and flora. It is designated as a nature reserve and a Ramsar site. The protected area covers 5,750 hectares: it was established in 1994, designated a nature reserve by decree in 2009, and declared a Ramsar site on 2 February 2012. The area extends across parts of the Tataouine Sud and Remada delegations in Tataouine Governorate.

Oued Dekouk can be reached via National Road 19 between Tataouine and Remada. Tracks lead to various parts of the area; some are only partly accessible on foot through dunes or marshy terrain. Bear these varying access conditions in mind when planning to visit specific parts of the protected area.

Hiking and Regional Traditions

In the wider area around Tataouine and Médenine, hikes are offered to different ksour in villages on the ridges. The ksour combine an interest in rural architecture with the experience of exploring the ridges. Flij are long strips that, when assembled, form nomadic tents; their production is considered a traditional activity in the wider area around Tataouine and Médenine.

In the wider Tataouine travel region, a geological tour starting at the museum in Tataouine was established in 2004. When it was created, it included seven stops: the museum, Ksar M’rabtine (Geosite No. 15), the Beni-Ghedir Valley (Geosite No. 13), the prehistoric site with rock paintings at Ghombrassen, the dinosaur park (Geosite No. 10), the Berber village of Guermessa (Geosite No. 14) and the fossil plant site (Geosite No. 19).

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Interests

When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Architectural and settlement heritage takes centre stage at Ksar Ouled Soltane, Chenini and Guermessa; fossils and landforms offer a geological perspective on the region. Oued Dekouk adds a distinctive natural highlight with its wetland and protected-area status. Compare the destinations that interest you with the exact location of an accommodation before deciding where to stay.
