Mahdia can be explored through three distinct historical perspectives: the Regional Museum, with its distinctive architectural history and collections; the old port carved into the rock; and the panoramic view from Borj al-Kabir. Each offers a different focus. At the museum, the building and exhibits take centre stage; at the port, its former use as a trading post; and at the fortress, the view across the city and peninsula. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Mahdia, these themes can help you tailor your stay to the interests of your travel group.

Architectural history and collections at the Regional Museum

Mahdia’s Regional Museum is housed in a former town hall, which was converted into a museum in 1997. The original façade from 1913 was preserved. Both its former use as a town hall and its later conversion are therefore part of the building’s history. The preserved façade gives the museum visit a distinctive architectural reference point.

In the jewellery room, the museum displays two Byzantine gold coin hoards from Raqqa and Chebba, Zirid scrolls and traditional pieces of jewellery. Women in Mahdia still wear these pieces at wedding celebrations. The ethnographic section displays traditional women’s clothing from Mahdia. The collection thus offers a variety of points of interest: the places of origin are specified for the coin hoards, the jewellery is linked to its present-day use at wedding celebrations, and the clothing is connected to Mahdia. Visitors who enjoy looking at individual objects will find several themes within a single museum visit, from coins and scrolls to jewellery and clothing.

The visit ends with a transition to the terrace of the Skifa al-Kahla. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view across the entire city of Mahdia. Moving from the exhibits and architectural history to the view across the city offers a different focus from looking at the collections alone.

The old port and Borj al-Kabir: use and views

The old port also offers a distinctive perspective on Mahdia. It has been carved into the rock since Punic times and used as a trading post. Here, construction and function go hand in hand: the port is defined not only by its location in the rock, but also by its historical use as a trading place. This makes it a different subject from the collections at the Regional Museum.

Borj al-Kabir offers another perspective. From the upper part of the fortress, you can enjoy a panoramic view across the Mahdia peninsula and the entire city. While the old port provides a historical perspective through its former trading function, the fortress offers a view of Mahdia as a whole. The museum, port and fortress therefore appeal to different interests: exploring collections, learning about a port’s historical use, or taking in the city and peninsula from above.

Consider your travel interests when choosing accommodation

When looking for a holiday apartment in Mahdia, these differences can help guide your choice of what to explore. Think about which experiences you would like to shape your stay: are you especially interested in the Regional Museum’s collections and architectural history, the former use of the port carved into the rock, or the panorama from Borj al-Kabir? If you are travelling with people who have different interests, it may help to discuss these priorities together in advance. Your choice can then reflect the kind of stay you want, whether you would prefer to discover exhibits and traditions or get to know Mahdia through its historic sites and views.
