A trip to Nefza can be planned around several specific attractions: the Djebel Khroufa nature reserve in the Nefza delegation, Zouarâa Beach a few kilometres from the village, and the annual Persimmon Festival in Ouechtata (Nefza). When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether nature reserves, the coast or festival culture should shape your stay.

Nature and Coast Around Nefza

The Djebel Khroufa nature reserve was established by decree on 18 December 1993 in the Nefza delegation, in Béja Governorate. Zouarâa Beach is a few kilometres from the village of Nefza. It is a Mediterranean sea turtle nesting site and is recognised for its importance in protecting endangered species.

Two distinct nature themes are therefore in focus: a protected area established by decree and a beach whose importance is linked to the protection of endangered species. When choosing your holiday rental based on your preferred focus, you can consider whether you would like to give greater weight to Nefza’s nature attractions or its coastal setting.

Persimmon Festival and Sporting Experiences

A Persimmon Festival is held every year in Ouechtata (Nefza). Most recently, it attracted many visitors from Tunisia and abroad, including from Korea, Japan and Algeria. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the event date for your travel period.

A past sporting event in the wider region was the Shitana Trail. From 10 to 12 May 2024, it was held for the fifth time as an international sporting event, with participants of various nationalities, in the Mogods region, particularly in the Nefza area. It combined a competition with trail running as an ecotourism experience.

A tourism concept also outlines the multidisciplinary circular route “Enjoy Nature and Learn from Bizerte to Béja”. The planned route passes through Chat Zouaraa and Djbel Khroufa; the concept also names Tunis and Béja, among other stops. The trail was a scheduled event in May 2024, while the circular route describes a broader regional concept.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Beja

The wider destination of Beja complements Nefza’s nature and festival themes with historical perspectives. Thugga already existed more than six centuries before the Roman annexation of Numidia and was probably the first capital of the Numidian kingdom.

The archaeological site of Dougga lies in north-western Tunisia, on a hill at an elevation of 571 m, overlooking the fertile valley of Oued Khalled. The monuments in Testour are also part of the Beja context: Zaouïa de Sidi Naceur was classified as a monument on 3 March 1915. Mesjed Sidi Naceur was classified as a monument on 13 March 1915.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to organise these themes according to your travel interests. Focus on Nefza if nature, the coast and the Persimmon Festival are your priorities. If you would also like to include archaeological and heritage themes, consider the wider destination of Beja when making your choice.
