German lakes offer different types of holiday: swimming, boating, fishing, cycling, walking, nature observation or a quiet stay by the water. The largest lake is not automatically the best choice for every group. Compare the water, shore town, arrival route, local services and accommodation before deciding.

How to compare the lakes

Lake size can be described by total area, water volume or the part that lies within Germany. For a useful holiday comparison, look beyond a ranking. Check bathing areas, water access, boat and fishing rules, nature-protection zones, cycle routes, walking paths and seasonal services. Accommodation on the waterfront does not automatically include private access to the lake.

Lake Constance: several regions in one trip

Lake Constance connects destinations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The shore, transport options and daily costs can differ considerably between towns. Decide whether the plan focuses on beaches, cycling, towns, museums or mountain excursions. Check the border crossings and the final route to the accommodation.

The Müritz and the surrounding lake district suit holidays centred on water, cycling, nature and quieter towns. Compare boat access, protected areas, bicycle storage, shopping and the distance between the property and the next activity. A car may be useful in more remote locations, while a town-based stay can simplify supplies.

Check the actual route to the water, the possibility of swimming or boating, equipment storage, outdoor space, heating, parking and nearby supplies.
