Discover Kpalime: Architecture and nature in the surrounding area
Accommodation in Kpalime
Kpalimé offers two different perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the town is home to historic buildings and traces of the German colonial era, while nearby nature destinations include the Forêt classée de Missahoé and Womé Waterfall. Whether your holiday rental should primarily serve as a base for exploring the town or for trips around the area depends on which of these aspects you want to focus on.
Culture and history in Kpalimé
Buildings and relics from the German colonial era include Ecole Primaire Notre Dame des Apôtres and Ecole Primaire Publique Centrale. The two schools are tangible examples of the town’s historical heritage. Kpalimé’s Gothic cathedral is also part of the cultural landscape of the Plateaux region: it was built in 1913 during the German colonial era.
Another cultural landmark is the Collège d’Enseignement Artistique et Artisanal (CEAA) in Kpalimé. The training programme described for 2023 covered six specialisations: ceramics for modern pottery, wood carving, hairdressing and beauty care, tailoring, batik, and cooking and gastronomy. The range therefore extends from crafts and design to culinary training.
The central market is also part of the townscape. On 28 October 2023, the Minister of Trade confirmed that activities there had begun. Market activities had already started that day.
Forest and waterfall nearby
The Forêt classée de Missahoé is a protected area in the Plateaux region, known for its diverse vegetation and conservation history. A guide is required for hikes and nature observation in the Forêt classée de Missahoé near Kpalimé. The area therefore offers a different focus from the town’s architectural history.
Womé Waterfall is also nearby: it is located in the canton of Womé, twelve kilometres southwest of Kpalimé, near the border with Ghana. Numerous steps descend the steep slope to a basin into which water plunges from the mountain summit. The summit and basin mark the difference in elevation within the mountain hollow. In the Monts Kloto, Womé, Kamalo, Tokpli, Kpimé and Tomégbé are described as the most visited waterfalls.
Kpalimé within the wider Plateaux destination
The wider Plateaux destination also helps put Kpalimé in context. Kpalimé is described as a weekend destination for rest and relaxation; fufu is part of the experience. Atakpamé, Kpalimé and Badou also form the region’s “triangle du café-cacao”.
Other regional cultural features include Odon-Itsu, a harvest festival dedicated to the nurturing earth and described as a tourist attraction in the Plateaux region. In Plateaux Ouest, numerous youth associations specialising in ecotourism lead hikes to discover medicinal plants, butterflies, caves and waterfalls. These activities are part of the wider regional context, not features of Kpalimé itself.
For travel from Lomé, the Plateaux region lists two main routes: Lomé–Atakpamé and Lomé–Kpalimé. These routes provide regional context, while the choice of accommodation depends on which destinations you want to prioritise during your stay.
Choose the right location for your stay
If you are particularly interested in historic architecture, it makes sense to focus your search on a holiday rental in Kpalimé. If you mainly want to include the Forêt classée de Missahoé or Womé Waterfall, take their location outside the town into account.
