Suncheon combines the vast reed landscape of Suncheonman Bay with gardens and a rich history of temples and culture. Heungryunsa Temple is located in Jukdobong Park in the city centre. It is a branch temple of Hwaeomsa Temple; Hwaeomsa is the 19th regional temple of the Jogye Order. Suncheon-si’s other landscapes and historic sites also offer different perspectives on the destination. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether nature, temple history or local food culture will shape your stay most, then check the location of available properties to match that focus.

Reed Wetlands, Waterway and National Garden

Suncheonman Bay is one of the five most important coastal wetlands in the world. It stretches along a three-kilometre waterway, with extensive tidal flats and reed beds. These reed beds serve as wintering and breeding grounds for various bird species, including Hooded Cranes. From the bay’s observation point, visitors can watch sunsets over the S-shaped waterway; check access conditions in advance.

The Suncheonman National Garden in Dosa-dong, Suncheon-si, offers a different landscape. Covering 1.12 million square metres, it is South Korea’s first national garden. Tulips and royal azaleas bloom there in spring. Together, the National Garden and Suncheonman Wetland are home to 790,000 trees of 505 species and 3.15 million flowers of 113 species. These figures make the garden a destination in its own right for anyone wishing to discover Suncheon through its plant life; the wetland adds an open horizon of water, tidal flats and reeds.

Temples and Historic Sites

The temples of Seonamsa and Songgwangsa are located on Jogyesan Mountain. Seonamsa lies in a lush forest with a variety of trees several hundred years old. Two three-storey stone pagodas stand in front of the main hall, Daeungjeon. The arched Seungseongyo Bridge is also part of the temple landscape: it is located in front of the temple and rests on natural rock. The approximate walking distance is useful to know when planning your visit: it is about one kilometre from the entrance to the temple grounds.

Songgwangsa combines temple history with its own cultural offerings. The temple has four National Treasures and 26 Treasures. Its Buddhist museum displays the temple’s cultural artefacts, and Templestay programmes are also available. Check current access conditions and programme participation arrangements before your visit.

Naganeupseong also preserves a traditional village landscape with a fortress, administrative buildings and private homes. The former administrative town extended across Dongnae-ri, Namnae-ri and Seonae-ri in Nagan-myeon. Its traditional way of life dates back to the Joseon period, from 1392 to 1910. The walled fortress town covers more than 59,504 square metres. Its wall is made of square-cut stones, is four metres high and three to four metres wide, and measures 1,410 metres in total. These details offer a way to discover the historic site both as a townscape and through its construction.

Film History, Tea and Market Life

Suncheon Filming Location served as an outdoor filming site for the 2006 TV series “Love and Ambition”. Houses from the 1960s and 1980s have been recreated there. Possible activities include walking through the alleys and taking photographs. Other offerings include listening to nostalgic music, an exhibition on film production, and experiences in a vintage classroom and school uniforms. Some offerings may change; check the visitor information before your trip.

For tea enthusiasts, the Suncheon Traditional Wild Tea House offers Darye, traditional tea etiquette, tea preparation, tea-cookie tastings and information about tea ceremonies. Suncheon Aretjang Market also offers a glimpse of regional food culture: fresh agricultural produce and fishery products from Suncheon and the surrounding area are sold there. It is a five-day market, held on dates ending in 2 or 7: the 2nd, 7th, 12th, 17th, 22nd and 27th of each month. The night market, with snacks, pancakes, fried chicken and other foods, takes place on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the market programme before your trip, as offerings may change.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

Suncheon’s appeal lies in its range of themes: wetlands and bird habitats, the National Garden, temples, historic architecture, film sets and tea. This personal focus can be a useful starting point when choosing a holiday rental. Then check the location of individual properties according to which of the places described interest you most. This helps you tailor your search to the kind of stay you want, without combining nature and cultural experiences into a single itinerary.
