In Gimhae, you can encounter the history of the Gaya kingdom at a variety of places: at the peak of Gujibong, among the Daeseong-dong burial mounds and in the town’s museums. A garden with a historical theme, activities at Gimhae Gaya History Park and the Global Food Town in Seosang-dong also invite you to discover other facets of the area. This lets you shape your stay around your interests—from archaeological traces to hands-on activities.

Gujibong: Tradition and a Museum

The peak of Gujibong is regarded as the birthplace of King Suro, founder of the Gaya kingdom. His tomb is located on its flattened summit. Also on the peak is a dolmen dating from the 4th century BC: five or six supporting stones hold up a capstone 2.5 metres in diameter. The site thus brings together a traditional story and tangible archaeological evidence.

At the foot of Gujibong is the Gimhae National Museum. It opened on July 29, 1998, to research and preserve the cultural heritage of the ancient Gaya kingdom. Its children’s museum is primarily designed for children aged six to ten. Visits generally require advance reservations; if places are available, you can register on site on the same day. Check the reservation requirements before your visit.

What the Daeseong-dong Burial Mounds Tell Us

The Daeseong-dong burial mounds offer insight into the emergence and development of the Gaya period, as well as the political and social structure of the kingdom. They also shed light on cultural exchange between Korea, China and Japan. A total of 136 burial mounds have been found in the area. The graves of kings and rulers lie on the hilltops, while the graves of lower social classes were built on the slopes. Among the finds are weapons that had been bent before burial—a remarkable detail of burial practices.

The Daeseong-dong Ancient Tombs Museum complements this perspective with exhibits: it displays artefacts from four excavations of the burial mounds. Also on view are life-size statues of a mounted soldier and a warrior, reconstructed using bone finds from the Yean-ri burial mounds. The archaeological finds and their presentation in the museum offer different ways to explore the same Gaya history.

King Suro, Queen Heo and Sureungwon Garden

The tomb of King Suro’s consort dates from the Gaya dynasty, is designated Historic Site No. 74 and is regarded as Queen Heo’s final resting place. The tomb complex of King Suro comprises several buildings. Sungseonjeon houses the ancestral tablets of King Suro and his queen. According to tradition, Suro founded the Garak kingdom in AD 42 and married Heo Hwang-ok, a princess from the Indian kingdom of Ayuta, in AD 48.

Sureungwon Garden, dedicated to the meeting of Suro and Queen Heo, offers a different setting for their story. Paths run alongside a forest and a pond. If you want to combine historic sites with time in nature, the garden makes a destination in its own right alongside the museums and burial mounds.

Experiences and an International Neighbourhood

Gimhae Gaya History Park brings the history of Geumgwan Gaya to life through games, activities and exhibitions. The “Exciting Experience” programme includes the 22-metre-high “Cycle” sky bike and a tower with 72 mission challenges. These activities offer a different focus from a museum visit: here, the emphasis is on taking part. Check the latest operating details before your visit.

Seosang-dong is also home to the Global Food Town, a neighbourhood with an international feel. Alongside the Gaya sites, it presents another facet of Gimhae, distinct from its historical traditions and archaeology. When looking for a holiday apartment, it may help to first decide which themes you want to shape your days: museum visits, historic sites, the History Park’s activities or the garden. Then tailor your search to your own plans and compare accommodation locations with the places you intend to visit.
