In Asan-Si and the surrounding area, culture, science, and history come together in many different ways: from a venue for performances and exhibitions to a folk village with a history spanning more than 500 years, as well as hot springs and a market with its own themed streets. This lets you organize your discoveries around your interests, rather than experiencing every place in the same way.

Art, Village History, and Church History

In the associated municipality, the Gujeong Art Center is a venue for performances and exhibitions. It was designed by architect Itami Jun (1937–2011; Yu Dong-ryong).

Oeam Folk Village is located in the area surrounding Asan-Si, and its history spans more than 500 years. The village is associated with agricultural experiences, overnight stays in hanok, and the Rice Straw Cultural Festival. If you are planning any of these activities in particular, check in advance whether agricultural programs and hanok stays are available; if the festival is relevant to your trip, confirm the dates.

Gongseri Catholic Church is also located in the surrounding area. It was the first Catholic church in Chungcheongnam-do. In 1894, it was established in Gongse-ri, Inju-myeon, as the main parish of the Diocese of Daejeon. The church has a church museum and a martyrs’ cemetery. Together, these places tell different aspects of the region’s culture, from village traditions to the history of the Catholic Church.

Discover Science

An overview from August 2024 describes a science play area for children, a science workshop, a special exhibition room, and a 4D theater on the first floor of the Jang Yeong-sil Science Museum in the associated municipality. For the second floor, the same overview lists hands-on activities about water, wind, metal, light, and space. They cover Jang Yeong-sil’s achievements and inventions, as well as modern science. Check the current setup of the exhibits before visiting. The five themes give children interested in science specific points of connection.

Hot Springs, Folklore, and the Market

The water at Onyang Hot Springs has a temperature of about 44 to 60°C. The Onyang Folk Museum opened on October 25, 1978, and collects, preserves, and exhibits both tangible and intangible folk materials. Onyang Hot Springs Market is known as a market accessible by train. It consists of a permanent market and the themed streets “맛내는 거리,” “멋내는 거리,” and “샘솟는 거리.”

The hot springs, folklore, and market each offer a different focus: the temperature makes the hot springs a distinctive attraction, the museum is devoted to folk materials, and the three named streets give the market a clearly organized layout. This means that interests in the associated municipality range from nature and everyday culture to science and history.

Plan Experiences and Accommodation Together

When choosing a vacation rental in Asan-Si, it helps to decide on the main focus of your trip first. If you are primarily interested in cultural history, Oeam Folk Village and Gongseri Catholic Church offer different historical themes. If science interests you, the areas described at the Jang Yeong-sil Science Museum provide specific points of connection. The hot springs and market offer a different focus. Prioritize your planned visits, then compare the location of your accommodation with the places that matter most to you.
