Discover Sihole through its Capuchin and missionary history. The Western Province offers another regional perspective on landscape, tradition and activities. You can first explore the local focus on history, then consider which topics in the wider province interest you.

Capuchin and missionary history in Sihole

There is a Capuchin monastery in Sihole. Fr. Gerard Joyce OFM Cap. and Br. Alexius Paolucci OFM Cap. were later assigned to this monastery. For travellers interested in the history of religious orders and missions, this gives them a specific connection to the place: two clergy members are linked to the monastery through their assignment, not just to the region’s history in general.

Joyce died on 12 July 1944. He was the first Superior of St. Patrick’s Mission in Kalabo, Sihole, Zambia; a grave plaque commemorates him. The historical connections thus extend from his role in the mission to his commemoration. Together with the monastery assignment, this creates a focus on cultural history that can be understood through various people and their different connections to Sihole.

Another historical perspective leads to Kalabo District: in 1942, Fr. Killian Flynn OFM Cap. and Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. crossed the district to find a site. This episode broadens the perspective from the specific monastery assignment in Sihole to an account from the district. For trip planning, it is therefore useful to distinguish between two scales: the history of the monastery and the broader history of Kalabo District.

Western Province: landscape and tradition

The Barotse landscape offers a different regional perspective within the Western Province: a vast, open, gently undulating plain criss-crossed by a network of channels. During the rainy season, from October to May, it fills with water from the Zambezi as the river overflows its banks. This seasonal change is part of understanding the landscape and also shapes the timing of an important tradition.

The Kuomboka ceremony takes place every year on the ancestral lands of the Barotse. Its date, however, varies with water levels. For planning purposes, this means that the ceremony’s annual occurrence and its changing date go hand in hand. If you are interested, check the specific event date rather than planning around a fixed calendar day.

Experiences in the Western Province

The Western Province is also home to Liuwa Plain National Park, on the floodplains of the upper Zambezi Basin. Visitors can go on a game drive there with a qualified guide; advance booking is required. Alternatively, you can book a Community Scout, who accompanies and guides visitors through the park in their own vehicle and shares local knowledge. Advance booking is required for this option too. The two offerings differ mainly in the type of accompaniment: a game drive with a qualified guide, or a trip in your own vehicle with a Community Scout. When planning, you can confirm availability with the park operator.

Water sports and fishing on the Zambezi are also among the Western Province’s main tourist attractions. The regional perspective therefore brings together a range of topics: an open landscape shaped seasonally by water, an annual ceremony, wildlife experiences in Liuwa Plain National Park and activities on the river. This selection can help you tailor your trip to whether you are more interested in landscapes and traditions, wildlife viewing or water activities.

Choose the right focus

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Sihole, it is best to start by asking what interests you about the place: the history of the Capuchin monastery, Gerard Joyce’s role in the mission or his commemoration. If you plan your trip around the Western Province as a broader regional area, you can also explore the landscape, Kuomboka and the activities mentioned there. This distinction can be useful when planning a trip together: it helps you decide whether your focus is on local history or on the province’s landscapes, cultural heritage and nature.
