Maruia lies in an inland valley in the Buller region, surrounded by mountains. Native bush and open farmland shape the landscape, and native birdlife can be found in the bush areas. Wide views across the valley are among the sights that draw visitors to Maruia. Open spaces, bush and riverside scenery give the destination a distinctive natural character.

The wider Maruia area stretches from Lewis Pass to the Buller River. In the Buller District, Victoria Forest Park encompasses the upper catchment of the Maruia River. Fishing and rafting are enjoyed on the Maruia River, offering water-based activities alongside walking tracks and viewpoints in the surrounding area.

Waterfalls and walking tracks nearby

The nearby Maruia Falls Track leads from the car park to the banks of the Maruia River, where a viewpoint overlooks the waterfalls. They were formed after the 1929 earthquake. The track is accessible from State Highway 65. Plan your stop to view the falls: swimming there is unsafe, and entering the water above or below the falls is not permitted. Observe this restriction on every visit.

The Lake Daniell Track is also in the nearby area. It is suitable for families with young children and for beginners to tramping in New Zealand. The well-formed boardwalk and bench track can be completed as a day walk and crosses the Maruia River at the Sluice Box. Important for planning: a section of the track via Station Creek is accessible only with the landowners’ permission. As land access agreements can change, confirm the access arrangements before your walk. Mountain bikes are not permitted on this track.

Day visits and walks at Maruia Hot Springs

Maruia Hot Springs is nearby, at Maruia Springs. Day visits allow you to bathe in naturally flowing mineral water from underground; a visit can last a few hours or a whole day. The complex includes a licensed restaurant with table service and views of the Maruia River and forest. Check access before you travel.

The walks there vary in length and difficulty. On an easy riverside walk, you can choose how far to walk. The Circuit Trail is an easy one- to two-hour forest walk. The waterfall walk, by contrast, is steep and suited to people with moderate walking ability and fitness. This makes it possible to distinguish an easy circuit from a more demanding walk, rather than assuming all routes require the same level of fitness. Follow the operator’s guidance for these activities.

Maruia as a base for planning your trip

When choosing a holiday rental, you can base your decision on the focus of your planned days: a day walk such as the Lake Daniell Track, views of Maruia Falls, or relaxation and walks at the Hot Springs. The options differ mainly in activity and walking effort. Consider which of them you want to shape your trip before narrowing down your accommodation search.

Maruia is accessible via State Highway 65 and Lewis Pass. Road conditions and closures can change, so check the latest situation before driving. This will help you factor the journey into your plans for excursions.
