River trails, bush landscapes and historic sites make for a variety of holiday experiences in Waikato District. The Waikato River is a defining waterway of the district; its regional course stretches from Taupō to Port Waikato. When looking for a holiday rental, a good first question is what you want your stay to be centred around: riverside activities, trails through native bush, cultural history, or Raglan’s surf and food scene.

Cycling and walking trails for different kinds of holiday

The Te Awa River Ride is a 65-kilometre paved trail for cycling and walking. It runs alongside the Waikato River from Ngāruawāhia to Lake Karapiro. The Hakarimata Rail Trail offers a different kind of outing: this family-friendly trail is designed for walks and bike rides, follows the former railway line between Ngāruawāhia and Glen Massey, and leads to attractive stream cascades.

The 18-kilometre Piipiiwharauroa Trail crosses the grounds of the Te Uku Wind Farm. As a return trip, it takes about four hours on foot or about two hours by bike. This makes it possible to factor the approximate travel time for both modes of transport into your day’s plans. Check local conditions before setting out on the Te Awa River Ride and Hakarimata Rail Trail. Access and wind farm operations on the Piipiiwharauroa Trail may change; check conditions before your trip.

Bush, views and wetlands

Hakarimata Scenic Reserve near Ngāruawāhia offers trails through native bush and the chance to see kauri trees. The Hakarimata Summit Track climbs to 374 metres. From the viewing tower, the views extend to the coast, across the Waikato Basin and towards Ruapehu. A visit to the reserve therefore combines a specific viewpoint with views in several directions.

You can reach Whangamarino Wetland by car via Island Block Road near Meremere or Falls Road from Te Kauwhata. Road conditions and access rules may change, so it is a good idea to check your route in advance. In Huntly, the Lake Hakanoa Walkway is divided into 13 sections. These include gardens, wetlands, a reserve with native trees and the Green Cathedral. The Green Cathedral is often used for weddings, has 180 seats and has parking for 40 cars.

History and cultural sites

In Ngāruawāhia, Pōtatau Te Wherowhero Monument and Kīngitanga Reserve form part of a wider landscape of historical, cultural and archaeological significance. The 1,500-metre Heritage Trail there is a loop right beside SH1. Stops along the trail include The Point, where the Waipa and Waikato rivers meet, and a gun turret from the British gunboat Pioneer.

The Rangiriri area includes Rangiriri Pā, Te Wheoro Redoubt and Lake Karaka with its shoreline wetlands. Woodlands Estate Historic Reserve also connects visitors with the landscape and early European heritage: it offers recreational and leisure opportunities and is valued for its landscape features. Specific facilities may change. Woodlands in Gordonton is a Category 1 historic site with a large colonial homestead built before 1881. If you are planning a visit, check the local visitor arrangements.

Surfing and food in Raglan

Manu Bay, south of Raglan, is known for a long left-hand surf break, considered one of the longest in the world. Surf conditions depend on the weather and sea conditions. Raglan also offers locally grown produce, locally made artisan cheeses, sourdough bread and weekly markets. As businesses and market dates can change, it is worth checking what is available on your travel dates.
