Waikino is closely connected with the history of Karangahake Gorge and the railway. The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway ends at Waikino Station; the Goldfields Railway also offers a ride on a historic train between Waihi and Waikino. Victoria Battery is nearby, and its history also shaped the origins of the town. On foot, by bike or on the rails: these experiences give your trip different focuses.

Explore Karangahake Gorge on foot or by bike

The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is part of the Hauraki Rail Trail. Two steel truss bridges and a one-kilometre-long railway tunnel define the route. The Historic Walkway to Waikino is 4.3 kilometres long; four hours are listed for the return trip. Along with the gorge scenery, visitors interested in the route will find striking reminders of railway history.

From Waikino, the Hauraki Rail Trail offers an easy bike ride to Karangahake Gorge and back: the loop is 18 kilometres long and takes three to four hours. The Historic Walkway also has a shared section for mountain bikes, from the eastern portal of the railway tunnel to Talisman Battery. The two time estimates offer a clear comparison for planning your day: the return walk takes four hours, while the bike ride takes three to four. This can help you decide which activity you’d like to spend more time on.

Railway and gold-mining history

The Goldfields Railway connects Waihi and Waikino with a ride on a historic train. Tickets are available at both Waihi and Waikino stations. Timetables and service conditions can change, so check them before your trip. Waikino Station is also the end point of the Historic Walkway—a tangible link between the walking trail and railway, without needing to treat the two experiences as the same.

Victoria Battery lies opposite the village of Waikino. It was New Zealand’s largest gold ore processing plant and was the reason the nearby settlement was established. The Victoria Battery Tramway Society offers tours of the ore kilns. The site’s visitor attractions include a tram, a site museum, tours of underground furnaces and a walkway above the ore kilns. Offerings may vary according to the operating schedule, so check in advance what is planned during your visit.

The wider Hauraki District

The Hauraki District stretches from the shellfish beaches of Kaiaua and Pūkorokoro/Miranda on the Firth of Thames in Tīkapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf) to the white-sand beaches of Whiritoa on the Pacific coast. The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway also forms part of this wider area: it follows a former railway line between Paeroa and Waihi and passes remnants of mining and railway history. Thousands of wading birds can be spotted at the shell banks and tidal flats of Pūkorokoro; the tide affects how easy they are to see. These coastal landscapes and wildlife experiences are attractions of the Hauraki District, not features of Waikino itself.

Choose Waikino as your base

If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Waikino, it helps to first decide what you’d most like to do: walk through the gorge, take the bike ride from Waikino or travel on the historic train between Waihi and Waikino. The routes and activities described here offer practical details for planning your day; for the train ride and Victoria Battery, you should also check the relevant operating schedules.
