Kikiwa: Historic Routes and Trails in the Nearby Beebys Area
Accommodation in Kikiwa
Kikiwa, in the upper Motupiko Valley, is shaped by its connections to historic routes. At Kikiwa, the historic Nelson Route joined the Motueka Route, which was itself connected to the Wairau Route. From here, the historic route continued upstream alongside the Motupiko River before leading to Lake Rotoiti. This helps convey the significance of the place within a network of routes: in addition to the connected routes, the course of the old travel corridor is also recorded.
Historic connections in the Tasman District
In the wider Tasman District travel area, Lake Rotoiti provided abundant food and other resources along this historic route, allowing supplies to be replenished. This brings together two different perspectives on Kikiwa: the route connections describe the place and the course upstream, while the resources at Lake Rotoiti are part of the wider historic travel area. Those interested in the history of the routes will find not just individual route names, but also an indication of how travel connections and supplies were linked.
Forest, tussock and mountain trails nearby
In the surrounding area, the landscape changes between beech forest and open grassland. Nearby Beebys Ridge is mostly covered in beech forest; around the Beebys Hut site, the forest opens out into tussock grassland. Along the ridge at Beeby’s Knob, the route passes through open tussock grassland and alpine herbs. These descriptions reflect the different landscapes along the trails, rather than grouping them into one continuous natural area.
Beeby’s Knob is a 1,442-metre summit. The return trip there is suitable for a half-day outing on foot or by mountain bike. Part of the Te Araroa Trail also runs through the Beebys area, where hiking and mountain biking are popular activities. The landscape along Maitland Ridge is also worth considering when planning a day out: the nearby track passes through beech forest and across clearings with views of the Rainbow and Wairau valleys.
Tour duration, trail profile and directions
Allow four to six hours for the Beebys Knob–Red Hills circuit via Maitland Ridge. The Maitland Ridge Track is rated as a technically challenging single track for experts: it is narrow and has some steep descents. Check current track conditions before setting out. There is a car park at SH63 and another at Tophouse Road at the start of the circuit. Parking for the Beeby’s Knob track is on Korere-Tophouse Road, 6.9 kilometres south of Kikiwa; the turn-off is on a wide bend.
Another nearby mountain biking destination is Unhinged. The trail ends at Tophouse–Kikiwa Road, opposite Waireka Road. It is rated difficulty level 5 and has 700 metres of descent. This adds a specific elevation profile for another route to the information about timing and scenery at Maitland Ridge. Here, too, it is advisable to check current trail conditions before riding.
Beebys Hut as an overnight option
Nearby Beebys Hut is a standard hut with six bunks in the Nelson Lakes area, where an overnight stay is possible. The hut can be reached on foot or by mountain bike; access by 4WD vehicles is no longer available. Hikers can reach it via the Beebys Track on Korere-Tophouse Road, while mountain bikers can use the route from Tophouse Road. Since access and hut information may change, check both again before your trip.
