The Clutha District stretches along the coast between Dunedin and Invercargill and forms an outstanding section of the Southern Scenic Route. Its character appeals to a range of travel interests: multi-day cycling on the Clutha Gold Trail, gold history around Lawrence, and coastal surf spots. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first consider which of these experiences you want to make the focus of your trip.

Several days on the Clutha Gold Trail

The Clutha Gold Trail is 135 kilometres long and classified as an easy Grade 1–2 trail. The route is listed as taking two to four days and is suitable for people with a moderate level of fitness. This timeframe gives you a guide for planning your holiday, while the trail length and grade provide practical information about the route. Check conditions before setting out.

A 62-kilometre extension between Lawrence and Waihola opened on 25 August 2023. It connects the existing trail network in Central Otago and Clutha and heads towards the east coast as a cycling route. This means you can also consider the trail in terms of its extension and connection to this network. If cycling is important to your trip, you can take the multi-day route and the extension into account as different aspects of your planning.

Spring and gold history around Lawrence

Every spring, Lawrence hosts a daffodil show on the grounds of Weatherston’s Brewery. If you want to time your visit to coincide with it, check the exact dates in advance. This seasonal event offers a different focus from the cycling route or coastal activities.

Gabriels Gully Historic Reserve is three kilometres from Lawrence. A viewing platform looks out over the gully; along a three-kilometre gravel track, there are 14 information panels and benches. Gabriels Gully was the site of the first major gold discovery in Otago, which led to the gold rushes of the early 1860s. The views and information panels make the site interesting both for its landscape and its gold history.

Bellview Wetlands Reserve is a two-minute walk from Lawrence’s main street. Its tracks wind through native bushland with birdlife. This means a range of nature and history experiences can be found around Lawrence: at Gabriels Gully, the gully and gold history shape the visit; at Bellview Wetlands Reserve, it’s the bushland and birds.

Coast and waves

The Clutha District has more than 200 kilometres of coastline and a variety of surfable wave types, including beach breaks, river breaks and reef breaks. At Kākā Point, the beach break is shaped by rocky points and is suitable for surfers from beginner to advanced level. Conditions depend on swell and weather; tides also play a role at Kākā Point. Check conditions before surfing rather than assuming they are consistent.

When choosing a location, you can use your itinerary as a starting point: if several days on the Clutha Gold Trail are the main focus, you’ll plan differently than for a trip with historic visits around Lawrence or coastal surfing. Deciding on your preferred focus first can help you tailor your holiday rental search to the experiences you want to set aside time for.
