Baylys Beach – Coastal Scenery at Ripiro Beach

Baylys Beach is a small part of Ripiro Beach, the longest beach on New Zealand’s west coast. The settlement has impressive sandstone cliffs and high dunes. The dunes are considered wild and rugged, complemented by the ever-changing sunsets on the west coast. Exposed remnants of an ancient kauri forest are also among Baylys Beach’s landscape features. The wreck of the Alcemene, a three-masted French warship that sank as early as 1815, was also found at Baylys Beach.

Shellfish and local history

At low tide, visitors can gather shellfish at Baylys Beach; check the rules and for any closures beforehand. Toheroa is a well-known local shellfish delicacy, but collecting this shellfish for the public is prohibited. The ban followed overfishing in the 1960s and 1970s.

Paths and getting around

A boardwalk about 200 metres long connects Baylys Beach with the car park and provides a dedicated pedestrian route with ramps and handrails. It was completed in December 2024; check local notices for maintenance and possible temporary closures before your visit. The coastal walking track and the boardwalk serve different purposes: one is a coastal walking track, while the other is the pedestrian connection between the car park and the beach. Public toilets at Baylys Beach are maintained by the Kaipara District Council; if their condition matters to your plans, confirm it locally.

The section of Ripiro Beach associated with Baylys Beach is a public road, where New Zealand’s standard road rules apply. Those driving on the beach should stay on the harder sand below the high-water mark. At low tide, access is normally available to most vehicles. Because tides, surf, erosion and access can change, check local conditions before setting off.
