Owhango – Walking Trails, Birdlife and River Adventures

Owhango combines a distinctive walking route with opportunities to discover native wildlife and enjoy a range of activities on the water. You can shape your trip in different ways: around a day hike, wildlife watching, local history or river activities. The village itself also has some distinctive features – from a former post office in a building around a hundred years old to a competition organised annually by the school.

Hiking the 42 Traverse

The 42 Traverse ends in Owhango and is a well-known day hike, with a stated duration of 3 to 7 hours. This gives you a specific guide when considering whether a longer hike fits your travel plans. Part of the 42 Traverse between the Ohinetonga Road end and Waione Stream is also part of the Te Araroa long-distance trail. From the Ohinetonga Road end, the trail continues to Owhango. Birdlife and conservation

The Ohinetonga Reserve is home to threatened whio and weweia, as well as whiteheads, North Island robins and kererū. Anyone interested in native birdlife can find several different species here in a conservation area. Owhango Alive works to protect and improve the environment of the Ohinetonga Reserve, the Whakapapa River and the village of Owhango. Its efforts support native flora and fauna as well as the enjoyment of locals and visitors. Nearby Tongariro Forest is also home to threatened native plants and animals; one of New Zealand’s five kiwi sanctuaries is located there.

Rivers and activities on the water

A swimming spot on the Whakapapa River can be reached from the area by the bridge via the Ohinetonga Loop Track. The track follows the river upstream for about 700 metres to a junction. Owhango Domain has two tennis courts in a setting surrounded by bush. The Old Post Office Lodge offers another glimpse into the village’s history: the building is around a hundred years old and served as a New Zealand post office until 1989. It was converted into a 1930s Art Deco lodge. The Owhango Pumpkin Growing Competition is another local highlight. The annual event is organised and run by Owhango School.
