Loburn offers two memorial sites with different focuses and a creative course programme. The North Loburn School Fallen Scholars’ Memorial remembers former pupils; the Loburn War Memorial focuses on conflicts and peacekeeping. At Sunflower Studio, working with acrylics takes centre stage. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, consider what you want to focus on: memorial sites and creativity in Loburn, or trails and landscapes in the wider Waimakariri District.

Memorial sites with two perspectives

The North Loburn School Fallen Scholars’ Memorial is a column monument built in 1919 at 813 Loburn Whiterock Road. It remembers eight former pupils who died in service during the First World War. The dedication gives this site a clear historical connection: the focus is on remembering the former pupils and their fate.

The Loburn War Memorial is in the northern part of Loburn Domain, north of the upper car park and between the pottery building and Loburn Whiterock Road. It honours the ten major conflicts in which New Zealand has been involved, as well as the country’s peacekeeping missions. The memorial is conceived as a place for reflection, where individuals and groups can remember and reflect on the past at any time. The two monuments therefore differ both in their dedications and in their historical perspectives.

A 2015 district reserve plan lists Loburn Domain at 154 Loburn Whiterock Road. Check local access conditions before travelling.

Acrylic pouring and a culinary connection

Sunflower Studio offers acrylic pouring courses in Loburn, North Canterbury. The courses cover the basics of colour theory, mixing colours and the mixing recipes used. Participants create a poured artwork on a 20 × 16-inch canvas. If you enjoy making things yourself while travelling, this course offers a specific activity: understanding colours, combining them and bringing them together in an artwork. This is a different focus from exploring the memorial sites and may be a factor when choosing your travel interests.

A 2021 regional description mentioned Lemongrass restaurant in Loburn and its Lemongrass Crackle dish, created with Foothills honey, Loburn lime and fresh lemongrass grown on site. This specific regional combination of ingredients is another culinary connection to consider when planning a trip.
