In Ashburton District, experiences range from rugged high country and lakes to river trails, gardens and historical collections. There are also thermal pools in Methven and activities at Mt Hutt. When planning your holiday, you can start by asking yourself whether you want your days to focus more on nature and outdoor activities, water experiences or culture—and which holiday home best suits that focus.

Landscapes and outdoor trails

Hakatere Conservation Park covers almost 60,000 hectares of rugged high country, tussock grassland, beech forest, rivers and lakes. These landscapes give the district a distinctly natural character. Ashburton Lakes also offer a range of options: you can swim, go boating, fish, watch birds, camp or have a picnic. If you like to consider several kinds of nature experiences during your stay, you’ll find a different range of options here than on a day devoted mainly to historic places or a thermal pool.

There are various options for getting around on foot or by bike. The Ashburton / Hakatere River Trail is an easy walking or cycling route; it follows the Ashburton River from Melrose Road to the sea at Hakatere. The Methven Walkway passes through scenic farmland, along rivers and through bushland. At Rakaia Gorge, there are several walking tracks and trails, as well as access to the river. At Wakanui Beach, walking tracks let you explore an area with significant biological diversity.

At Awa Awa Rata Reserve, two walking tracks lead to Scott’s Saddle or a ridgeline. The area is also known as a picnic spot and day-trip destination. Its name, Mahitahi, recalls another dimension of the place: the Awa Awa Rata Reserve area was a kāinga mahika kai, a place where food was gathered. In this way, outdoor activity and cultural history sit side by side in the district, and an outing need not be limited to just one kind of experience.

Water experiences and Mt Hutt

In Methven, Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa is a thermal bathing and wellness destination. The Discovery offering includes family-friendly thermal pools with a lazy river and water-play features. Tranquility is different: this adults-only offering includes a swim-up bar and a restaurant featuring local flavours. The two experiences suit different preferences—a shared visit with water-play features or time in the adults-only area with a restaurant.

Mt Hutt also brings a different kind of experience to your holiday planning. The Mt Hutt Snowsports School offers beginner lessons, children’s programmes, private coaching and multi-day programmes. The Summit Six chairlift takes you to 2,086 metres above the Canterbury Plains, with views stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Southern Alps. If mountain and snow experiences matter to you, they can help shape the focus of your trip.

Gardens, railways and history

Ashburton Domain is a 37-hectare open space with lawns, gardens and recreational facilities. These include a paddling pool, a small playground for preschoolers, and a track for children learning to ride a bike and older children with skateboards or roller skates. A rose garden, mature exotic trees and seasonal flower beds complete the picture. As well as providing opportunities for outdoor activities, the Domain offers garden spaces and a variety of options for children of different ages.

If you’re interested in railways and everyday history, there are several attractions to consider. Plains Historical and Vintage Railway has historic locomotives and steam engines. Pioneer Village includes a railway station, a church, a cottage and recreated shops, as well as a blacksmith’s workshop with a working forge. Tinwald Domain features heritage attractions such as historic trains, museums, model railways and collections of historic machinery. Ashburton Museum offers educational programmes on the cultural and social history of Mid Canterbury and Aotearoa.

When choosing a holiday home, it helps to decide on the mix of experiences you want from your trip: lakes and walking trails, activities for children, thermal pools, Mt Hutt or historic discoveries each offer a different focus. You can also explore the district’s towns: Ashburton, Methven, Mayfield, Hinds and Mount Hutt.
