Waiatarua lies in the heart of the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area. Native rainforest shapes the landscape along its western and southern boundaries; from its elevated position, there are views of Auckland, Waitemata Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges.

Rainforest, Protected Area and Views

Large, continuous areas of original and regenerating native rainforest lie along Waiatarua’s western and southern boundaries. The Waitakere Ranges Regional Park also borders the settlement on both sides. Waiatarua’s ecosystems are nationally significant and characterised by a great diversity of native flora and fauna. The naturally functioning Oratia Stream has intrinsic value and provides habitat for native plants and animals.

The elevated position offers excellent views of Auckland’s urban area, Waitemata Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges. The city, harbour and ranges each add a distinct feature to the panorama. A small lookout near the corner of Scenic Drive and West Coast Road offers a good view across the former Bendall land, which is now fully forested.

Traces of the Bendall Family

The Bendall family home still stands on West Coast Road in Waiatarua. It was remodelled around 1920 and sits among oak trees attributed to Mary Bendall. This ties the area’s history to specific names and places: a surviving house, the associated oak trees and West Coast Road.

Mary Bendall ran an accommodation house for tourists and travellers in Waiatarua. Around 1887, a bridle track to Henderson railway station was opened from her property. Rose Hellaby House is located at 515 Scenic Drive in Waiatarua. Its lookout in the rear garden offers wide panoramic views of the Waitākere Ranges and the Auckland skyline. The house is currently being restored as an arts and crafts and souvenir shop.

Waiatarua as a Place to Stay

Waiatarua is also on the route to the west coast beaches. If you would like to include both the scenery of the ranges and coastal destinations in your stay, you can consider the area as a possible base while searching for a holiday rental. You can choose between different priorities: rainforest, elevated views and local history shape Waiatarua’s character, while the beaches add a coastal dimension to the trip. When choosing where to stay, consider which of these aspects you want to define your trip.
