Tavuki: Tradition and History on the Shores of Tavuki Bay
Accommodation in Tavuki
Tavuki lies on the shores of Tavuki Bay and is the chiefly village of the Tavuki Bay Community. For this community, the village serves as a center for traditional, church, and government activities. Tavuki thus combines its waterfront location with a distinctive cultural role—a destination in its own right for planning your trip to Kadavu.
Tradition and Social Order
At traditional events of the Tavuki Bay Community, the chief, Tui Tavuki, is addressed first. He also receives the first bowl of kava, called yaqona, at these occasions. This order makes the chief’s role in the ceremonies clear. Tavuki is also the seat of the paramount chiefs of Nacolase, the traditional leaders of a confederation of 22 villages. Nacolase is Tavuki’s traditional Cavuti.
Weaving is also part of the traditional descriptions of the place: women in Tavuki weave mats, baskets, and fans. These three examples offer a concrete impression of different forms of craftsmanship. Tavuki and Yawe also have a relationship described as vitabani, literally “sides”—another part of the cultural context that shapes Tavuki.
Village Green, Church, and Remembrance
Historically, the chiefs’ houses were more or less orderly arranged around a central village green where ceremonies took place. Large old house-platform foundations have been preserved in Tavuki. In March 1971, the Duke of Edinburgh entered Tavuki’s village green. This was a specific historical visit that gives the village green a place in the more recent history of the village’s collective memory.
The village’s religious significance is also reflected in historical accounts. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Sunday afternoon services in Tavuki Bay were often held in the large church in Tavuki village. People from seven villages attended, and attendance could reach the low hundreds. This describes the practice at that time, not a current church service schedule.
Tavuki Bay and the Wider Context of Kadavu Province
A sea journey from the government station in Vunisea to the Tavuki Bay Community is said to take 10 to 15 minutes. Check the connection before your trip; this time estimate is not a current timetable.
Beyond Tavuki, Kadavu Province offers a broader view of the island world. Kadavu is an archipelago that includes Ono, Buliya, Yaukuve, and other islands, many of them uninhabited. The Great Astrolabe Reef protects the islands. North of Ono Island lies the uninhabited island of Yabu, locally known as “Birdland” because of the many seabird species that breed there. Some resorts in Kadavu Province also offer their guests the opportunity to dive and snorkel with large, gentle manta rays. These activities are available to guests of the respective resorts.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests
If Tavuki’s village history and traditions are key to your trip, you can use Tavuki as a location reference when searching for a holiday rental. Near Tavuki, Mereoni Vuase operated a homestay in Namuana Village in April 2025 for tourists and local travelers, including officials visiting Kadavu. Check its availability before your trip. If you also want to consider the wider island world or the activities mentioned when planning, look to Kadavu Province as the broader regional context.
