Kadavu is a destination with two scales: Kadavu Village provides a specific point of reference for location and arrival, while reefs, coastline and cultural encounters are part of the wider travel region. This distinction is useful when choosing a holiday rental. First consider whether you want to base your stay mainly around Kadavu Village or focus on regional nature and cultural experiences.

Islands, reefs and wildlife

In the wider travel region of Kadavu Province, the focus is on the Kadavu archipelago, including Ono, Buliya, Yaukuve and other islands; many of them are uninhabited. The Great Astrolabe Reef in the Kadavu island group protects the islands. It is described as one of the largest and healthiest coral reefs in the world. The extensive reef system is rich in pelagic and reef fish, lies close to the coast and is easily accessible to divers and snorkellers. This gives you two perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the widely spread island world and a fish-rich reef system that is especially appealing to those interested in marine life.

Birdlife is another distinct theme. The uninhabited island of Yabu, north of Ono Island, is locally known as “Birdland” because of the many seabird species that nest there. While the Great Astrolabe Reef draws attention to reef and pelagic fish, Birdland is all about birdlife. This makes it easy to distinguish between two different regional nature themes when planning your trip.

Coast, culture and special experiences

Kadavu Province also offers cultural encounters: visitors can explore villages and schools, stay overnight with a local family, and take part in song and dance performances and other traditional activities. In the wider region, multi-day kayaking tours follow Kadavu’s rugged coastline and connect several resorts. This offers a choice of different kinds of travel: cultural activities, nature experiences and an expressly multi-day tour on the water. In Kadavu Province, some resorts offer guests the opportunity to dive and snorkel with large, gentle manta rays.

Location and arrival

Road conditions for Kadavu Village have been described at different points in time. In July 2017, the road from Vunisea extended only as far as Vunisei District School; Kadavu Village and other villages depended on fibreglass boats. In September 2023, the access road built for Kadavu Village was passable only in favourable weather, as the pilot sections had not yet been gravelled. Check current accessibility before your trip. Kadavu has regular flight and ferry services to and from the mainland; check the relevant schedules in advance as well.

If you are planning a trip with children, you can narrow down your options by considering shared interests: would you like to focus mainly on reefs and fish, seabirds, cultural encounters or multi-day paddling? These themes differ considerably in character; the kayaking tours are expressly multi-day. Then use Kadavu Village or the wider travel region as a point of reference for your holiday rental search, and check which starting point suits the experiences you want. This way, you can begin choosing accommodation based on your travel profile and include the practicalities of arrival in your plans.
