Lyonville lies on the edge of Wombat State Forest, halfway between Trentham and Daylesford. The 68,000-hectare state forest is home to a diverse range of cool-climate flora and fauna. Forest trails, historic traces and garden experiences reveal different sides of the town: you can spend time outdoors or focus on Lyonville’s history and local events.

Forest trails and nature around Lyonville

The flat Domino Trail is a 12-kilometre loop connecting Lyonville with Trentham railway station in nearby Trentham. It passes through Wombat State Forest and follows the original railway line between Daylesford and Carlsruhe. The route is suitable for walking and cycling. Check local conditions before setting out.

The Lyonville Mineral Springs area also combines time outdoors with practical amenities: it has been a popular picnic spot since the early 20th century. The site includes toilets, drinking water, free camping, wildlife-watching opportunities and walking trails. As facilities and access may change, check current conditions before your visit.

The Historic Walking Trail shares Lyonville’s history and connects it with the town’s present-day landscape. You can combine views of the surrounding area with an interest in the town’s past.

Local history and traditions

The Lyonville State School site includes the ruins of a schoolhouse where up to 60 students were taught from 1881 until its official closure in 1968. Also on the site are historically significant Nissen huts from the Second World War. Lyonville Hall was formerly known as the Lyonville Mechanics Institute and Free Library and was built in the 1880s on donated land and with donated timber.

Lyonville railway station opened in 1880 on the Carlsruhe–Daylesford line. Train services ended and the station closed in 1978. A more recent memorial is Lyonville’s Avenue of Honour: established in 2022 on Daylesford-Trentham Road, it honours people who have served.

Wesleyan Chapel also tells a story of change in the town. Around the turn of the 21st century, it was moved to Babbington Park in Lyonville and restored, and is now used as an event venue. If you are planning an event, confirm current availability directly.

Recurring events include the annual Lyonville Woodchop and Lyonville Bake-off, both held at Lyonville Hall. At the Bake-off, local residents and visitors showcase their baking talents. Dates may change; check current event details before planning your trip around them.

Flowers, gardens and planning your visit

Fleurs de Lyonville is a small flower farm offering floral design workshops throughout the year. Two-hour guided farm tours are available from November to March. As current dates must be confirmed directly with the farm, it is worth checking if you plan to organise your stay around a tour.

The Real Gardens of Lyonville showcases local cool-climate gardens. The annual selection changes and ranges from wilder to more manicured gardens; there is no set current schedule. The Artful Meadow also combines a garden and cool-climate nursery with nature-focused planting. Visitor experiences include garden tours and visits to see the emus. Check opening hours and visitor conditions in advance.

When choosing your holiday rental in Lyonville, your preferred itinerary can help guide your decision: the Domino Trail lends itself to a trip planned around walking or cycling, while local history, events and gardens offer other points of focus. If a particular event or visitor experience is important to your trip, factor its dates and current availability into your plans.
