Lake Charm: Lake, Nature and Water Sports
Accommodation in Lake Charm
Lake Charm combines an unusual character as a lake with water sports, nature and local discoveries. The lake is semipermanent, slightly saline and has a sandy bottom; the surrounding land is used for agriculture. This makes the landscape different from what you might expect at a densely developed lakeside town. Lake Charm is one of a group of shallow natural lakes between Kerang and Swan Hill, offering a range of ways to spend time by the water or on land.
Lake and wetlands
Lake Charm covers 457 hectares and has a volume of 19,940 megalitres. It is also part of the Kerang Wetlands designation. The wetland system supports large populations of endemic and migratory waterbirds and serves as a refuge during drought. Lake Charm is also listed as a Ramsar site. For anyone interested in lake landscapes and wetlands, this is more than a place for water-based activities: the lake is part of a larger natural setting whose significance is also tied to its waterbirds and its role as a refuge.
Over several years, the Victorian Fisheries Authority has stocked the lake with golden perch and Murray cod. Fishing is therefore another activity associated with Lake Charm. In spring, the Redfin Fishing Classic draws hundreds of anglers. This is a special occasion for visitors who would like to combine their trip with a fishing event; however, the competition is separate from the recreational activities that are available at the lake at other times.
Active on and by the water
Visitors come to Lake Charm for boating and water skiing; swimming and kayaking are also possible recreational activities. You can experience the area from the water or by swimming and paddling, depending on your interests. There are also recurring competitions: Lake Charm regularly hosts the Victorian Ski Racing titles and Victorian point score events. A powerboat race is held here once a year. These events also give the lake a sporting side that goes beyond an individual visit.
Loop track and local discoveries
For a walk, there is the Lake Charm Loop Track: the easy 2.7-kilometre circuit starts at the Lake Charm General Store and passes Lake Charm Foreshore. It is a clearly described option for anyone who would like to include a waterside walk in their stay. There are also walking trails about 2.5 kilometres long west of the South West precinct. These details refer to different trails and areas, so choose according to the specific route that interests you.
The Lake Charm General Store is also home to a 23-metre-long mural by Paul Oswin depicting native birds. It offers another perspective on the birdlife that is important to the surrounding wetlands. Lake Charm also has close ties to the Indigenous community. Nature and cultural connections are both part of the area's character.
Choose Lake Charm for your holiday
There are two caravan parks on the shores of Lake Charm. If you are looking for a holiday rental or holiday home in Lake Charm, your travel interests can help you choose where to stay: water sports and fishing events offer a different focus from the loop track, wetlands or discoveries at the General Store. This makes Lake Charm a destination that brings together lake activities, nature and local highlights, without limiting your stay to just one way of experiencing the area.
