Randalls Bay offers more than a long sandy beach: trails around the bay lead to a summit, through a rehabilitated quarry and to a secluded beach. You can shape your stay around the landscapes you’d like to explore together—from views across the water to coastal heath and river gravel.

Beach and coastal landscape

Randalls Bay Beach is a long sandy beach on a generally calm bay. Garden Island and Bruny Island shelter the bay, although wind-driven waves can still form depending on the strength and direction of the wind. When planning your day, it’s therefore worth considering the various trails as well as time at the beach.

The coastal area where Randalls Bay is located stretches from Echo Sugarloaf State Reserve through Randalls Bay to Mickeys Beach. This sequence describes a larger landscape area, not a single loop walk: the individual tracks pass through different environments and each has its own focus.

Trails with different highlights

The Echo Sugarloaf Nature Trail is a loop around Echo Sugarloaf. It climbs the western slope to the 198 m summit and returns via the southern ridge. The route offers a clear option for anyone looking to include a summit loop in their holiday plans.

From the Echo Sugarloaf Nature Trail, views open up over Randalls Bay to the Huon River, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the mountains to the southwest. The trail combines views of the bay with a panorama of the river, channel and mountains. If the coastal scenery is what draws you to choosing holiday accommodation, this trail is a striking example of what Randalls Bay has to offer beyond the beach.

The Quarry Reserve Track showcases another side of the area. It passes through a rehabilitated quarry and over river gravel with coastal heath. The area also provides habitat for silver peppermints and black gums. Rather than focusing on a summit or beach, the trail highlights the plant life and varied landscape features of the coastal area.

The Mickeys Beach Track leads to Mickeys Beach from the western end of Randalls Bay Beach. The route follows sandstone steps, passes around the headland and runs along the coastal reserve to the beautiful, secluded Mickeys Beach. If you’d like to combine a beach day with a walk through the coastal reserve, this offers a different outing from the loop around Echo Sugarloaf.

Friends of Randalls Bay is open to everyone who supports the ecologically sustainable use and enjoyment of the coastal area.
