Whyalla
Accommodation in Whyalla
Whyalla brings together maritime history, local art and a foreshore on the Spencer Gulf. This makes for a varied visit: at the Whyalla Maritime Museum, topics in the history and natural history of the upper Spencer Gulf sit alongside shipbuilding, while the foreshore and marina draw your attention to the coast. Other highlights include Hummock Hill Lookout and Ada Ryan Gardens. You can tailor your trip to different interests—from culture and experiences on the water to time in a green space.
Maritime history and art
The Whyalla Maritime Museum is home to one of Australia’s largest HO-scale model railway layouts. Its exhibits cover the Second World War and BHP shipbuilding, as well as the maritime and natural history of the upper Spencer Gulf and the heritage of the Barngarla people. Permanent exhibits include an edition of Matthew Flinders’ diaries from 1814. The “Singing to the Sharks” exhibition celebrates the cultural heritage of the region’s Aboriginal communities and their connection to the sea. The museum offers an introduction to different aspects of regional history and cultural heritage.
The HMAS Whyalla also tells the story of South Australia’s shipbuilding history: it was the first modern warship built there, in 1941. Today, the ship stands on land, two kilometres from the sea. If you’d like to visit, note the access requirements: entry is by guided tour only, and closed-toe shoes are required.
Art is another distinct focus to explore in Whyalla. The Whyalla Art Trail features 23 works of art spread across the town, including textured mosaics, sculptures and murals. The Whyalla Foreshore is one stop on the trail.
Foreshore and lookout
The Whyalla Foreshore and Whyalla Marina form a waterfront area on the Spencer Gulf. Visitors can fish from Whyalla Circular Jetty. The marina’s boat ramp lets you explore the coast from the water; the marina also has a swimming enclosure. You can choose how to enjoy the waterfront: fish from Circular Jetty or explore the coast from the water.
For a different perspective, head to Hummock Hill Lookout, which offers exceptional panoramic views over Whyalla. If you’d like to get to know the town beyond individual exhibitions or activities, this viewpoint adds a sweeping view of the urban area.
Ada Ryan Gardens: green space and history
Ada Ryan Gardens are connected to the Whyalla Foreshore and occupy the site of Whyalla’s first cemetery. The cemetery was later relocated to its current site in August 1918. The site’s history therefore goes beyond its present-day use as a garden. Visitors can make use of free barbecue and picnic facilities, as well as public tennis courts and play equipment. If you’re travelling with children, the play equipment offers a practical place to stop; the barbecue and picnic facilities also make it easy to take a break outdoors.
Other amenities include accessible public facilities and paved paths.
