At the foot of Mount Remarkable, Melrose combines outdoor experiences with stories from local and regional history. Visitors can walk from here into Mount Remarkable National Park. There are also cycling and walking trails, a loop trail starting in Melrose, and historic sites to discover in different ways. When choosing a holiday rental, one question may therefore make the difference: should your stay be shaped mainly by outdoor activities, cultural experiences, or a mix of both?

Cycling and walking trails with different profiles

The Remarkable Epic Trail is a 39-kilometre loop that starts in Melrose. If you want to include a circular cycling route in your travel plans, this offers a specific option starting in town. The Melrose to Wilmington Rail Trail also starts in Melrose and runs 22 kilometres north. It is mostly flat to gently undulating and suitable for beginners. These features make it a different choice from a challenging multi-day trek.

The Black Range Trek is a challenging, 26-kilometre, two-day hike from Mambray Creek to Melrose. The route therefore ends in town; it should not be confused with the loop trail that starts there. The Heysen Trail also passes through Melrose. If you are interested in mountain biking trails, Melrose, the foothills of Mount Remarkable and nearby areas offer around 80 kilometres of singletrack in total. The Melrose Nature Hike runs through the foothills, and walkers and mountain bikers share the trail. These details offer a range of options without implying that the individual trails form a single route.

History and cultural discoveries

The Melrose Heritage Walk takes you to historic buildings and landmarks. The Melrose Courthouse Heritage Centre offers a closer look at the region’s history: it covers early justice, the police and the region’s pioneers, as well as Nukunu legends and stories. The Nukunu are the traditional owners of this area. Different narratives and historical topics sit alongside one another, rather than limiting the visit to a single era.

The Melrose Mine, where mining began in 1848, is on the Nature Walk. The Melrose War Memorial commemorates those who died in service during the First World War. If you are interested in local history, you can include these memorial sites, the Heritage Walk and the Courthouse Heritage Centre in your plans. The topics range from early industry and regional development to commemorating those who died in war.

Local life and planning your visit

The Melrose Strawberry Fete is held annually on the first Sunday in November, from 10 am to 4 pm. It features market stalls and strawberry products. The Off the Deck Melrose Market is a separate event, held monthly on the terrace of the North Star Hotel in Melrose. All tickets for the Melrose Museum Ghost Tours must be purchased in advance. These events have their own visiting conditions and dates, so plan for them according to when you are travelling.

Melrose Paradise Square offers a well-kept lawn, a garden and picnic areas in the town centre. It is another way to shape your stay alongside hikes, cycling routes and historic discoveries. If your travel group has different interests, you can tailor your choices accordingly: a longer hike, a cycling route suitable for beginners, history, or time in the town centre. When looking for a holiday rental in Melrose, the key consideration is which of these sides of the town you would like to experience during your trip. You can also discover Wirrabara as another nearby town.
