Kadina: Discover Copper History and Things to Do
Accommodation in Kadina
Kadina combines the history of local copper mining with themes of dryland farming, social history and a variety of leisure activities. The Kadina Farm Shed Museum presents several perspectives on local history side by side; other experiences range from an 18-hole course to a miniature railway and a treetop adventure. There is also the Wallaroo–Kadina Trail, which follows the route of a former railway line. If you’re looking for holiday accommodation in Kadina, you can first consider whether cultural history, leisure activities or the historic route will shape your trip.
Kadina’s History from Different Perspectives
Through themed and photographic exhibitions, the Kadina Farm Shed Museum tells the story of Australian dryland farming, local copper mining and Kadina’s social history. The covered exhibition area spans half a hectare. Its three themes offer several historical perspectives and go beyond copper mining: farming, mining and social history are all in focus. This gives you more than one perspective on Kadina’s past.
The museum also includes the historic Matta House, built in 1863. It was constructed as a residence for Edward Austin Horn, manager of the Matta Mine. Visitors can tour the house; check the current visitor arrangements before your visit. While the museum tells a broad story across several themes, Matta House focuses on a single building and its connection to a mine manager. This shift between multiple themes and one specific historic house offers different scales of local history.
Things to Do in Kadina
The Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre offers two different leisure activities. Copper Coast Putt Putt is an 18-hole course on the grounds in front of the visitor centre at 50 Mines Road in Kadina. Around the Visitor Information Centre, the Copper Coast Old Engineering and Machinery Club runs miniature train rides on a handmade track. The rides take place twice a month and are suitable for all ages. For families with children of different ages, this is a specific activity to enjoy together. The course and the miniature railway differ both in the activity and in their schedules. Check Putt Putt opening hours and the current ride dates before planning your visit.
Kadina’s Victoria Square is also home to the treetop adventure “Walk in the Trees”. It offers a different experience from the exhibitions and the course. As leisure facilities may change, it’s a good idea to check current operating details before your visit.
A Historic Railway Line Between Wallaroo and Kadina
The Wallaroo–Kadina Trail runs between Wallaroo and Kadina along the route of a former railway line that was in use from the 1860s to the 1900s. Its historical connection sets the trail apart from the miniature railway: the trail follows a former railway line between two towns, while the miniature railway runs on a handmade track near the visitor centre. If you plan to include the trail in your trip, check current access and track conditions in advance.
