Perlubie: Beach, Birdlife and Coastal Activities
Accommodation in Perlubie
Perlubie combines the beach experience at Perlubie Beach with nature observation and an annual sports day. The calm, shallow water is suitable for swimming, and you can enjoy relaxed walks along the shore. There is also a monitoring site for beach and migratory birds, as well as the Perlubie Beach Sports on New Year’s Day. You can plan your stay around what matters most to you: time by the water, an insight into citizen science, or the special event date.
Beach and birdwatching
Perlubie Beach faces west. If you take a beach destination’s orientation into account when choosing where to go, this is a clear feature of the area. The calm, shallow water offers the opportunity to swim, while the shore is ideal for relaxed walks. These two beach activities offer different ways to spend time by the water: get in for a swim or explore the coast on foot.
The Pix-Stix monitoring site is located at the Eba Island end of Perlubie Beach. Locals and visitors can take part in citizen science activities there. The site monitors the habitat of nesting beach birds and the feeding grounds of migratory shorebirds. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a special connection between visiting and observing: the focus is on both nesting habitats and the areas where migratory birds find food. As well as a beachside stay, Perlubie offers a specific opportunity to learn about the local birdlife.
Perlubie Beach Sports on New Year’s Day
The Perlubie Beach Sports take place every year on New Year’s Day. The programme includes a 1,600-metre open endurance race, which is tide-dependent. There are also sand races in set divisions. The event day offers a different focus from a peaceful beach walk or a swim: if you’re planning to visit Perlubie around the turn of the year, the Beach Sports may be relevant to your travel plans. The race depends on the tide, and the sand races are divided into competition classes.
Getting there and beach camping
Perlubie Beach Campground is 1.5 kilometres off the Flinders Highway. Access is via Perlubie Landing Road, which has both sealed and unsealed sections. Due to the beach access, 4WD vehicles are recommended for the campground. Please also note the access restriction: access to Perlubie Beach Campground via Eba Anchorage is not permitted. When planning your trip for beach camping, take into account the route via Perlubie Landing Road and the restriction at Eba Anchorage.
Beach camping is permitted only on designated sites along 600 metres of white sandy beach. This is not a general permit to camp anywhere along the beach. If you’re considering this type of stay, factor in the designated sites and access conditions when choosing where to stay. These camping options should be distinguished from the search for a holiday apartment.
Accommodation in Perlubie
Perlubie Sea offers environmentally conscious accommodation with views of Perlubie Beach. If an explicitly stated beach view is important when choosing accommodation, this gives you a specific point to consider in your search. When looking for a holiday apartment in Perlubie, the beach activities, birdwatching and the date of the Beach Sports may each be reasons to consider the area. Which of these experiences matters to you depends on whether you most want to enjoy the water, nature or the event day.
