Quorrobolong brings together a local memorial and a range of nature and cultural experiences in the surrounding area. The Quorrobolong First World War Memorial Gates commemorate those who served in the First World War. The Watagans offer a very different focus: rainforest trails, lookouts and opportunities for birdwatching. So the accommodation that suits your trip also depends on whether you mainly want to discover the landscape and walking trails or the town’s history.

A memorial connected to the town’s history

The Quorrobolong First World War Memorial Gates were originally built for Quorrobolong Public School. They commemorate those who served in the First World War. The site therefore highlights both remembrance of wartime service and its original connection to the school. For a stay that includes local history as well as nature experiences, this is a distinct and clearly defined point of interest.

The Watagans: getting there and road conditions

The Watagans National Park is in the area near Quorrobolong. The route from Cessnock to the park runs via Quorrobolong Road, Sandy Creek Road and Heaton Road. Roads in the park are unsealed, and only some can be driven on by two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry conditions. Weather-related restrictions may change, so it is advisable to check road conditions before setting out. There is no public transport to Watagans National Park. These travel conditions are an important factor when coordinating your accommodation with your planned outings.

Lookouts and rainforest trails

A section of the Great North Walk in Watagans National Park offers lookouts and opportunities for birdwatching, and is particularly suited to experienced bushwalkers. The nearby Narrow Place lookout can be reached by car or on foot as part of the Great North Walk. From there, the view extends north over Quorrobolong, Ellalong, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri. This lookout combines a walk with a sweeping view across several places in the surrounding area.

Another walking option is the Circuit walking track, an easy walk along a creek through native rainforest. The path follows the creek and passes a rock face completely covered in moss. At the end, you can paddle in the creek or the reservoir; free barbecue facilities are also available for picnics. In Watagans National Park, a walking track also leads through native rainforest to Gap Creek Falls. Moss-covered rock faces and boulders line the track, while the tall canopy is formed by Australian red cedars and Illawarra flame trees. The contrast between the easy creek walk and the section of the Great North Walk that is particularly suited to experienced bushwalkers can help you choose the right focus for an active day.

Cultural and natural history of the area

The Watagan Mountains have more than 40 Aboriginal sites that illustrate art and engraving techniques. Remains of earlier forestry also tell the story of settlement in the area. Endangered brush-tailed rock-wallabies are also known to live below the escarpment at Narrow Place lookout. These features give the area a cultural and ecological dimension in addition to its walking trails and lookouts.

Quorrobolong Scribbly Gum Woodland is a named ecological plant community known from a small area between Quorrobolong and Mulbring, and may also occur elsewhere. An ecological determination updated on 23 August 2002 describes its known distribution. It gives the known woodland area as about 70 hectares; this figure may not correspond to a current survey. The woodland adds to the understanding of the region’s landscape but is not a destination in its own right.
