Pacific County – Coast, Nature and History
Accommodation in Pacific County
Pacific County combines the Pacific Coast, places steeped in history, and diverse nature experiences. Along 28 miles of Pacific coastline, you will find opportunities for scenic outings, historical discoveries, and trails through coastal forest, grassland, and wetlands. Those looking for a vacation rental or holiday home can use their preferred travel focus as a guide when choosing the right base for their stay.
Pacific Coast and Notable Viewpoints
The North Head Lighthouse offers a special view of the landscape. Visitors can explore the grounds or climb to the top of the lighthouse. From there, you can see the Pacific Ocean, the Long Beach Peninsula, the Columbia River Bar, and the northern Oregon coast. The lighthouse is still active and supports navigation in the dangerous waters below Cape Disappointment.
Cape Disappointment State Park is located on the Long Beach Peninsula along the Pacific Ocean and overlooks the mouth of the Columbia River. Covering 2,023 acres, the campground brings together several defining landscape features of the region. At the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, you can also learn more about Lewis and Clark and their journey to the Pacific Ocean.
Nature Between Forest, Bay, and Wetlands
Willapa Bay is one of the most pristine and species-rich estuaries in the contiguous 48 United States. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat for more than 200 bird species. For your travel planning, this means you have a clear choice: You can focus your days more strongly on landscapes and wildlife observation or combine nature experiences with culture and regional history.
Birdwatching is possible at Fort Columbia State Park. In addition, miles of wooded hiking trails lead through the landscape. The park is considered one of the best-preserved historic coastal defense sites in the United States, combining nature and history without requiring you to plan these interests separately.
At the Willapa Bay Interpretive Center, the landscape and regional past also stand side by side. The center presents the history of oyster farming in Willapa Bay through artifacts, photographs, and a 20-minute video presentation. A replica of a home belonging to oyster fishermen and their families is also on display. The terrace offers views of the bay and shoreline as well as opportunities for wildlife observation.
Historic Places and Special Collections
Oysterville is well suited to an outing focused on history. At Oysterville Church, visitors can pick up a brochure for a walking tour through Oysterville’s Historic District. Oysterville Historic District was selected for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Shoalwater Bay Museum also displays a historic canoe that is nearly 27 feet long.
These places give the trip different emphases: The lighthouse represents maritime navigation, Oysterville represents local history, and the Willapa Bay Interpretive Center represents oyster farming in the bay.
Trails for Different Day Plans
The Dune Forest Loop runs through the coastal forest and tidal flats of Leadbetter Point State Park. The South Bay Trail passes through grassland, coastal forests, and freshwater and estuarine wetlands, offering views of Willapa Bay. This trail is accessible only on foot, which you should take into account when planning.
For longer outings, the 56-mile multi-use trail from Chehalis to South Bend is available. It is suitable for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. By contrast, an easy hiking trail crosses the peninsula to sandy beaches. The differences between these options can help you decide whether you are looking for an extended multi-use trail, a nature trail, or a shorter route to the beaches.
Places for Further Accommodation Searches
For your further selection of locations, you can also compare Ilwaco, Seaview, Long Beach, Ocean Park, and Tokeland. Depending on which landscapes, museums, historic sites, or trails interest you most, different locations may provide a suitable base for searching for a vacation rental or holiday home in Pacific County.
