Tukwila: Trails along the Green River and city history
Accommodation in Tukwila
Tukwila offers plenty of ways to shape a stay: expansive parks, riverside trails, wildlife viewing, and historic sites. In Tukwila, the Green River Trail runs through industrial areas near the Duwamish Waterway and into the broad Green River Valley. Parks add places to play, picnic, and stroll. Elsewhere, plaques and a monument recall the history of the city and its rivers.
Parks and trails around the Green River
At 54 acres, Fort Dent Park is Tukwila’s largest park. Its facilities and grounds include soccer fields, a playground, a picnic area, restrooms, trails, and open spaces. If you’re traveling with children, you can include the playground in your day’s plans; the soccer fields and open spaces offer other specific places to visit in the park. You can make use of its different areas depending on what you have planned, whether for sports or a break outdoors.
Tukwila Pond has a different focus: it has picnic tables, a grill, restrooms, and a walking path. So there are specific options for planning a picnic at both locations: the Pond has tables and a grill, while Fort Dent Park also offers soccer fields and a playground.
The Green River Trail extends for more than 19 miles. In Tukwila, it runs through industrial areas near the Duwamish Waterway and into the broad Green River Valley. A 19-mile paved route runs from Seattle’s southern city limits to the city of Kent. When navigating the trail, you can therefore keep both its long route and specific endpoints in mind. At Fort Dent Way, near Fort Dent Park, the Interurban Trail begins at a junction with the Green River Trail. It is a non-motorized, off-road route running north to south. The two trails can be distinguished by their described directions: the Green River Trail reaches the Green River Valley, while the Interurban Trail runs north to south.
Wildlife and the riverside landscape
Along the Green River Trail, there are osprey nests and several covered benches for birdwatching. Duwamish Gardens offers another glimpse of nature along the river. The City of Tukwila’s three-acre public park has a viewpoint, a gathering area, a boat launch for hand-carried boats, and a waterfront trail. It also provides important shallow-water habitat for young salmon.
Ducks, geese, sandpipers, ospreys, harbor seals, and otters have been spotted in the restored Duwamish River environment. The nature highlights at the two locations are therefore distinct: osprey nests and birdwatching benches stand out along the Green River Trail, while Duwamish Gardens adds habitat for young salmon and a variety of observed wildlife. Much of Duwamish Hill Preserve is wheelchair-accessible via a paved ramp.
Traces of Tukwila’s history
Tukwila’s first residents were members of the Duwamish Tribe, who lived along the Black and Duwamish Rivers. Another historical connection leads to Joseph Foster: his homestead was located at the present-day site of Foster Links Golf Course. A memorial plaque on Tukwila’s oldest maple tree recalls the homestead; the tree stands at the northern end of the golf course. A monument also commemorates Foster’s Landing, where riverboats stopped to load and unload goods and passengers.
The former Tukwila City Hall is also part of the city’s history. It is a nationally registered historic site and one of Tukwila’s oldest buildings. The Tukwila Historical Society used the building to present and share the city’s history with the public. Together with the memorial sites at Foster Links Golf Course and Foster’s Landing, this part of the city’s history shows how closely Tukwila is connected to its rivers and the stories of settlement there.
