Petersburg: History, Architecture and Nature
Accommodation in Petersburg
Petersburg can be explored through a variety of interests: a driving tour of the National Battlefield, nature trails, and a rich history shaped by architecture, commerce and changing uses. A look at Pocahontas Island and the Appomattox River offers further perspectives. You can tailor your stay to your travel party’s interests rather than reducing Petersburg to a single historical era.
Battlefield History and Riverside Trails
Petersburg National Battlefield offers a driving tour with 16 stops across all four park units. The Eastern Front Unit also has around ten miles of nature trails suitable for hiking, running and cycling. There are also three historic interpretive trails, each about half a mile long. The different lengths and themes provide practical guidance for planning active time without assuming a particular walking pace.
Pocahontas Island offers a different perspective: archaeological sites illustrate its history from prehistoric times through the 20th century. In the 19th century, the island became a Freedom Colony and is described as the first settlement in Virginia inhabited predominantly by free Black people. The Appomattox River Trail runs along the island, where there is a natural launch site for canoes and kayaks. This brings historical insights and a connection to the river together.
Historic Architecture in the City
The Petersburg Old Town Historic District includes approximately 250 buildings across 190 acres. Most of the residential, commercial and industrial architecture dates from the 19th and early 20th centuries; the district preserves one of Virginia’s richest collections of historic buildings. Second Presbyterian Church is a typical example of mid-19th-century Gothic Revival architecture. Its features include Gothic plasterwork, a central pulpit and a ribbed, vaulted apse.
Other buildings reflect different eras and architectural styles. The Nathaniel Friend House was built in 1815–1816 in the Federal style. The city acquired it for preservation, carried out basic structural stabilization work and successfully rehabilitated it. The Appomattox Iron Works complex is one of the most complete architectural records of an early iron foundry in the United States. The Hustings Courthouse was originally built in 1839 in the Greek Revival style.
The market also tells the story of Petersburg’s development: the 1879 farmers’ market is now known as City Market or Old Market. The present-day City Market building stands out for its shape and decorative cast-iron brackets, which support the canopy and projecting market shelter. South Side Depot, meanwhile, is Virginia’s oldest surviving train station.
Museums, Exhibits and Special Events
At Blandford Church Museum, the decorative stained-glass windows are among its notable features: they were designed and installed in their entirety under the direction of New York’s Louis Comfort Tiffany. A guided tour explains the building’s history as an 18th-century Anglican church and its use as a field hospital during the Siege of Petersburg. Battersea, built in 1768 on the banks of the Appomattox River in the Neo-Palladian style, offers another architectural landmark. The Battle of Petersburg Rev War Re-enactment takes place there every April; check the current event dates before your trip.
Centre Hill Mansion dates to 1823 and is an example of the Federal style. Its basement galleries host exhibits about Petersburg’s history, and the content may change. South Side Depot serves as the city’s visitor center and has a gallery space with changing exhibits by local and regional artists. Checking opening hours and the current program can help you plan your visit.
Farmers Bank of Petersburg was built in 1817. On a guided tour, you can see the original vault and safe, a printing press, teller windows and other artifacts; check opening hours before your visit. If you are traveling with people who have different interests, you can plan these tours, architectural details and trails as separate highlights. Cameron Field, meanwhile, is focused on sporting events: George Cameron donated the field to the city in 1933. It serves year-round as a venue for the Appomattox Governor’s School soccer team, youth soccer programs, adult flag football, youth football and numerous sporting events. The schedule may change.
When choosing a vacation rental, you can first decide which aspects of Petersburg you want to shape your stay, then compare the accommodation’s location with your planned destinations. Discover more travel destinations: Petersburg.
