Petersburg brings the history of the American Civil War to life in a variety of settings: on the grounds of the National Battlefield, in historic buildings, and on Pocahontas Island. There are also nature trails, the Appomattox River Trail, and a surviving example of early ironmaking. If you’re planning a trip to Petersburg, you can choose between exploring history in depth and getting active outdoors, while discovering more than one chapter of the city’s history.

Battlefield: History Across Four Units and Nature Trails

There are several ways to explore Petersburg National Battlefield. A 16-stop driving tour takes you through all four units of the park. If you’d rather focus on outdoor trails, the Eastern Front Unit has about 10 miles of nature trails suitable for hiking, running, and biking. This comparison can help you plan your day: the driving tour connects four park units, while the nature trails in the Eastern Front Unit offer an opportunity to get active.

A shorter, paved option is the Petersburg Confederate Battery 5 Interpretive Trail. This gives you a choice between nature trails totaling about 10 miles within Petersburg National Battlefield and a short paved trail. Exhibits and audiovisual programs at the Eastern Front Visitor Center provide additional context, covering the siege and its impact on the course of the American Civil War. This allows you to consider both the scale of the Battlefield and the historical context as you plan your visit.

Historic Sites and Different Perspectives

The decorative stained-glass windows at Blandford Church Museum were designed and installed in their entirety under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany of New York. Guided tours also tell you about the church’s use as a field hospital during the Siege of Petersburg. A tour of Blandford Cemetery takes in monuments, graves, and funerary art. This visit offers a different focus: instead of the church’s use, it turns your attention to memorials and the design of the graves.

Centre Hill Mansion dates to 1823. Abraham Lincoln visited Centre Hill on April 7, 1865; exhibits in the basement galleries explore Petersburg’s history. The year it was built, the date of Lincoln’s visit, and the exhibits each offer a different way into the site, connecting a specific historical event with the broader history of the city.

Pocahontas Island and Industrial Heritage

In the 19th century, Pocahontas became a Freedom Colony—the first settlement in Virginia inhabited predominantly by free Black people. This history offers a different perspective on Petersburg from the siege sites and makes the development of a local community a subject in its own right. The Appomattox River Trail runs along Pocahontas Island. The island also has a natural launch site for canoes and kayaks—two options to consider if you’d like to include trails and water in your travel plans as well as history.

The city’s early industrial history is also part of the picture: Appomattox Iron Works is one of the most complete surviving examples of an early ironworks complex in the United States. Together with the Civil War sites, historic buildings, and the history of Pocahontas, this complex expands the view of Petersburg beyond a single subject.

Find the Right Vacation Rental for Your Trip

When choosing a vacation rental in Petersburg, start by deciding what kind of visit you want to shape your stay: a driving tour through four park units, guided visits to historic sites, or time on the trails. Then choose your preferred accommodation location based on the places you’d like to visit. This way, you can plan around the subjects that genuinely interest you, rather than a general idea of what a stay in Petersburg should look like.
