Hart comes to life through specific stories and distinct seasonal impressions: the town’s development can be traced from its early post office to the railroad, while the colors of wheat, cotton, and corn change with the seasons across Castro County. Hart Days adds a parade to the picture. For families who enjoy combining a trip with shared discoveries, local history and the landscape offer different topics to explore together. When choosing a vacation rental, you can consider whether you want to focus on Hart itself or include other places in Castro County in your trip.

Seasonal Landscapes in Castro County

In the broader travel region of Castro County, Dimmitt, Nazareth, and Hart are the three towns. Depending on the season, the landscape is shaped by lush green wheat pastures, white cotton, and golden corn; cattle and horses in various colors are also part of the scene. Visitors who experience the region in another season will encounter a correspondingly different range of colors and landscapes. If the agricultural surroundings are important to your vacation plans, the timing of your trip can therefore shape your expectations of the scenery.

Traces of the Founding and the Railroad

Hart was named after T. W. Hart. In 1900, the Hart family opened a post office in their home and began selling fresh meat and groceries there. Another thread in the town’s early history leads to T. W. Hart’s wood-frame house: it was brought from Swisher County to the new location in Hart on mule-drawn skids. In this way, the history becomes tangible through specific people and events—the town’s name, a place for mail and goods to be sold, and the moving of a house.

Hart became an incorporated town in 1925. That year, the Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway, encouraged by the town’s promoters, announced plans for a depot there. By 1926, the line had been completed and a depot built in Hart; Jack Hall served as its agent. In 1928, Hart’s business district was moved about three-quarters of a mile northwest to bring it closer to the depot.

A one-room building constructed in 1902 near Jack Killough’s property served as the first school and church building in the Hart area. Hart also had a connection to the surrounding countryside in the 1980s: at that time, it served as a market center for nearby farms and ranches. This later role as a market center adds another chapter to the history of the post office and railroad.

Hart Days and Earlier Event Traditions

Hart Days was a community festival celebrated annually in August during the 1980s. Hart Days includes a parade; a cook-off was also part of the program at one Hart Days celebration. Dates and programs may change, so it is advisable to check for current information before visiting. In the 1980s, a rodeo was held in Hart every February. While Hart Days is associated with August, the February rodeo belongs specifically to the account of those decades.
