Keystone combines the history of a mining town with unusual attractions. These include a museum with mining and mineral collections, historic sites, and activities ranging from a mine tour to a narrated train ride. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is also nearby. If you are looking for a vacation rental, Keystone is a starting point for discovering these different sides of the area.

Mount Rushmore and Keystone’s Location

Keystone is the town closest to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The memorial is approximately 3.2 km southwest of Keystone in Pennington County. It preserves a granite mountain sculpture dedicated to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. If you would like to make a visit the focus of your trip, you can consider Keystone when choosing where to stay.

Mining History, Museums, and Historic Sites

The Keystone Historical Museum offers insight into various aspects of local history. Its collections include early mining tools, historic photographs, and rocks and minerals. It also features memorabilia related to Carrie Ingalls. The museum’s daily visiting season runs from May 1 to September 15. If you plan your trip for this period, you can make a museum visit a distinct cultural and historical highlight.

You can also discover the town’s history at specific sites. Keystone’s old schoolhouse was built in 1899 and served as the town’s main school until 1988. A historic town tour by the Keystone Area Historical Society includes 21 stops in Keystone. Together, the building and the tour offer different ways to explore local history: one through a preserved schoolhouse, the other through several stops around town.

The Rushmore Borglum Story focuses on the work of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The exhibition shows the process from blasting the rock to depicting the “Seated Lincoln.” Visitors can also stand beside a life-size, to-scale replica of Lincoln’s eye from Mount Rushmore. This lets you encounter the monument not only through its finished granite mountain sculpture, but also through specific aspects of its creation and an unusual replica.

Big Thunder Gold Mine connects local history with mining: it was discovered by two German immigrants in 1892 and offers mine tours. The National Presidential Wax Museum in historic Keystone offers a different perspective on American history. It features more than 100 life-size wax figures of notable people. These attractions offer different points of interest—from the history of mining to well-known figures from America’s past.

Active Experiences and Outings Together

For a more active outing, Rushmore Tramway Adventures offers an Aerial Adventure Park with a treetop obstacle course. The attraction also includes a 2,000-foot Alpine Slide. Holy Terror Mini Golf also involves some activity, with an 18-hole course that runs more than 50 feet up and down a steep hill. The two activities are quite different. When planning your day, you can weigh up the obstacle course, slide, and a round of mini golf without having any of them replace a visit to the historic sites.

The name Holy Terror Mini Golf refers to Keystone’s last active gold mine, after which the course is named. So even a recreational attraction connects with the town’s mining history. The options range from a mine tour to a round of mini golf.

By Train Between Hill City and Keystone

The 1880 Train offers a narrated, two-hour round trip covering 20 miles between Hill City and Keystone. The ride is a distinct excursion option that connects the two towns. For more places at the same level: Rapid City, Hill City.
