Reidville’s history can be traced particularly well through its educational institutions and the places associated with them. The timeline spans the schools that began teaching in the 19th century, the development of a high school into a college, and a congregation that first met in a college chapel. An older building with several uses also forms part of this chronology. For travelers interested in local history, Reidville offers specific names and dates that come together in a clear timeline.

Schools and a House for the Principal

The Reidville Male High School began classes in March 1858. The Reidville Female High School followed in February 1859. The dates are less than a year apart and mark the start of teaching at the two institutions at different times. In 1871, the Reidville Female High School became Reidville Female College. This change is part of the history of the same educational institution and marks a later stage in its development.

The Reidville Academy Faculty House was built around 1860 as a residence for the principal of Reidville Male High School. It is also associated with Reidville Male Academy and Reidville Female Academy. Both academies played an important role in education in Upstate South Carolina from 1858 to 1905. The house adds another perspective to the school timeline: it was not itself one of the schools mentioned, but was connected to the principal of the Male High School as his residence. The institution’s development and the principal’s residence thus stand side by side as distinct parts of the same local history.

The History of Antioch Presbyterian Church

The origins of Antioch Presbyterian Church can also be traced through several stages. Most members of the congregation settled in Reidville around 1883. The first recorded meeting of the church in Reidville took place on January 2, 1884, in the chapel of Reidville Female College. The date and location clearly distinguish this early meeting from the later use of a church building of its own.

A white-framed building on a property next to Reidville Female College became the new Antioch Presbyterian Church. The congregation held its first meeting there in the fall of 1889. Thus, a little over five years passed between the recorded meeting in the college chapel and the first meeting in the new church building. Both places matter to the local timeline, but they represent different moments: first, meeting in the chapel, and later, gathering in the new church building.

An Older Building with Changing Uses

Sugar Tit Moonshine Distillery is a small-batch distillery in Reidville. It opened in 2015 in a 1,000-square-foot building dating from 1857. The building previously served as a pharmacy and general store. Here, two clearly distinct dates come together: the building dates from the mid-19th century, while the distillery opened there in 2015. Its former uses are also specifically identified. This sequence illustrates the difference between a building’s age and the start of its later use.
