Hollywood Between Nature and History
Accommodation in Hollywood
Hollywood, South Carolina, can be explored through several themes: swamps and higher-elevation mixed forest, habitats for wading birds, and traces of church and cultural landscape history. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, you can plan your stay around whether nature, historic sites, or a particular activity matters most to you. These different focal points give your trip more definition than a general impression of the place.
Swamps, Mixed Forest, and Wading Birds
Dungannon Heritage Preserve encompasses 320 acres of swamp with bald cypress and tupelo trees, as well as 323 acres of mixed forest on higher ground. The two areas are nearly the same size, but differ markedly in their landscape and elevation. Dungannon is therefore more than an expansive forest: the swamp and higher mixed forest form two distinct natural areas. The preserve is in the Hollywood area on Highway 162.
Dungannon Plantation Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area is managed as breeding and feeding habitat for wood storks and other wading birds. This conservation mission connects the landscape to its importance as habitat and covers both breeding and foraging. Seasonal restrictions apply to the boardwalk. If you plan to include this area in your trip, check the conditions for your intended visiting period.
Church Ruins and Reconstructed Rice Ponds
A different focus can be found at Stono Preserve, a 981-acre nature preserve and educational site for students in Hollywood, South Carolina. Reconstructed rice ponds are part of the landscape. The preserve is also home to the ruins of St. Paul’s Parish Church, one of the region’s earliest Anglican churches. Here, designed cultural landscapes and the remains of an early church stand side by side. For travelers interested in the region’s history, this contrast offers a concrete point of reference: alongside the natural areas, church history and landscape history come to the fore.
A Park in the Town of Hollywood
At 7.2 acres, Serenity Park is considerably smaller than the large preserves. It is located at the end of Trexler Avenue in the Town of Hollywood and was formerly known as Wideawake Plantation. The current name and former name provide two different points of reference for local history; its location on Trexler Avenue places the park within the town. In this way, a clearly identified place within the community complements the more expansive natural and cultural landscapes. Its smaller area also sets it apart in scale from Dungannon or Stono Preserve.
Boating and Fishing as a Focus of Their Own
Dawhoo Boat Landing provides access to the Dawhoo River for boating and fishing. This adds an activity-focused option that differs thematically from the bird habitats and historical traces. When looking for a vacation rental, it may help to first decide which of these interests is most important to your trip: nature and landscape, history, or the opportunity to boat and fish on the river. Then check which location suits your planned stay.
