Stark County combines impressive sports history, museums, historic sites, and diverse landscapes with lakes, forests, and trails. This allows you to shape your trip in many different ways: with a cultural program in Canton, excursions on the water and in nature, or a mix of short discoveries and longer trails. When searching for a vacation rental or holiday home, it is worth first deciding on the focus you want for your trip.

Culture and History in Canton

A major attraction is the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. The American Professional Football Association, which was later renamed the National Football League, was founded there on September 17, 1920. The museum is dedicated to the achievements and successes of the greatest legends of professional football. Modern interactive technology, unique artifacts, and a Madden EA Sports video game suite make the exhibitions an engaging experience.

The history of the American presidency is also present in Canton. The First Ladies National Historic Site consists of two properties in the city center: the home of First Lady Ida Saxton-McKinley and a visitor center. Tours of the house are offered daily at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. The Saxton McKinley Home is also the only surviving residence in Canton’s hometown with direct historical connections to President William McKinley. The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum is a family-friendly museum of history and science; the McKinley National Memorial, the burial place of William McKinley and his family, is located on its grounds. The gallery dedicated to the president contains the world’s largest collection of McKinley artifacts.

Other cultural attractions focus on different themes. The Canton Museum of Art presents between 12 and 14 exhibitions each year and offers, among other things, Free Family Days, gallery talks, behind-the-scenes tours, and Canton Arts District First Fridays. Art and history come together at the Massillon Museum. The MAPS Air Museum displays more than 55 types of aircraft as well as over 130 exhibitions of historic artifacts and interactive exhibits. As a war memorial, its Gallery of Heroes also contains a relic from the battleship USS Arizona, which was involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

Lakes, Forests, and Trails

For active days, the Congressman Ralph Regula Towpath Trail offers 26 miles for hiking and cycling in Stark County. The trail runs through shaded, flat terrain along the Tuscarawas River, through deciduous forests and rural and urban landscapes. Various access points connect it north to Cleveland and south to Tuscarawas County. At Quail Hollow Park, the paved Nature for All Trail and other natural-surface trails lead near spring-fed pools, wetlands, and coniferous and deciduous forests. The park covers more than 700 acres of rolling meadows, swamps, and forests surrounding a 40-room house. There is also a moderate mountain biking loop.

A range of activities is available on the water. Deer Creek Reservoir is a 334-acre reservoir surrounded by nearly 1,000 acres of forest. There, you can use motorboats with electric motors, launch from a shoreline kayak launch or an accessible kayak launch, go canoeing, or try stand-up paddleboarding. You can also observe bald eagles, ospreys, migrating waterfowl, white-tailed deer, and coyotes at the lake. Sippo Lake Park covers 300 acres; its trails run near the lakeshore and through wetlands and forests. Sippo Lake Marina rents boats and other watercraft.

Walborn Reservoir also combines nature observation and exercise. It covers nearly 1,800 acres and has seven miles of trails through pine forests, oak and hickory forests, and wildflower areas. Pairs of mature eagles have been nesting in this area for more than two decades. Walborn Marina rents rowboats, motorboats, SUP boards, canoes, and kayaks. At Petros Lake, a one-mile Mindfulness Walk with ten stations for mental health and the 1.20-mile Petros Lake Loop Trail with limestone gravel lead around the 13-acre lake. Fry Family Park was the first park in Ohio to be certified as an Urban Night Sky Place.

Choosing the Right Base for Your Trip

If you prefer museums and history, you can align your accommodation search with the cultural destinations you plan to visit and combine several museum days. For a trip focused on hiking, cycling, or water activities, the parks, lakes, and trails mentioned above should determine your choice of location. Akron-Canton Airport provides access to SARTA buses, which serve travel within Stark County.

Stark County is also part of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area. The Magnolia Flouring Mills recalls this history: Richard Elson built it in 1834 along the route of the Sandy & Beaver Canal; it remained in the Elson family’s possession for 171 years and was acquired by the Stark County Park District in 2005. Public tours are usually held during the annual Canal Days festival in early August. For another local discovery, the free digital Hall of Fame Hops Craft Brewery Trail is available as a pass on your smartphone. The annual Stark County Fair takes place at the Stark County Fairgrounds in Canton.
