Nature Trails, Waterfalls and Outdoor Activities
The Gorman Nature Center covers 150 acres of forests, prairies, ponds and streams. More than five miles of public trails provide access to the area. In addition, the nature center offers public hikes, excursions and natural history programs every week. Cross-country skiing is also possible there. This allows you to vary your stay without limiting yourself to just one type of excursion.
The Richland B&O Bike Trail is interesting for cyclists and walkers. The paved route extends for 18 miles and connects four communities in Richland County. It follows a former railway line and is suitable for cycling, walking, running and inline skating. The trail can be used year-round from sunrise to sunset. Those who like to alternate active days with cultural activities when planning a trip will find a clear complement to museums and historic destinations here.
Waterfalls also add to the range of nature experiences. Fleming Falls Park and Preserve is a historic natural landmark named after John Fleming. Fleming Falls includes more than 15 cascades and waterfalls, several miles of scenic trails and more than 100 acres of natural woodland. Hemlock Falls is a waterfall nearly 100 feet high in Butler, Ohio. Malabar Farm State Park adds a cultivated-farm perspective to this landscape with a 900-acre working farm and the seven-mile Pleasant Valley Bridle Trail, where hiking is permitted.
History, Museums and Stages
Richland also offers many points of interest if you would like to focus your trip more on culture and history. The Ohio State Reformatory offers self-guided tours and guided tours, including the “Hollywood Meets History Tour” and the “Shawshank Bus Tour.” The historic prison also offers escape room experiences. The Shawshank Museum displays authentic props, costumes and film memorabilia from “The Shawshank Redemption.”
The North Central Ohio Industrial Museum focuses on the stories of the people, companies and inventions that shaped North Central Ohio. The Mansfield Fire Museum traces the development of firefighting, from bucket brigades and horse-drawn equipment to apparatus with internal combustion engines. At Oak Hill Cottage, a carefully restored and preserved Gothic Revival landmark in Mansfield, Victorian furnishings and artifacts belonging to the Jones family are part of the exhibition. The house museum is complemented by tours that begin between 2:00 and 4:30 p.m. as guests arrive and are led by docents.
For an evening of live entertainment, there is the Renaissance Theatre. It opened in 1928 as a grand movie palace and now presents an entire season of live performances. These include the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, Broadway musicals, concerts in various genres, comedy, films and original theater productions. Those interested in technology and speed can also plan a visit to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The site covers 380 acres and features permanent road-racing course configurations of 2.4 miles with 15 turns and 2.258 miles with 13 turns. The Mid-Ohio School offers professional driving and motorcycle-riding training; open test-and-tune sessions and a lapping program are also available.
Combining Excursions for Different Interests
There are also distinctive destinations for families traveling together. BibleWalk is Ohio’s only full-size wax museum and includes more than 100 life-size dioramas and 325 wax figures.
