Preble County combines historic traces with a varied landscape: Eight preserved covered bridges, wetlands, gently rolling hills, lakes, and historic sites give your trip several possible focuses. Its location along Interstate 70 provides access to Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Richmond. When choosing your vacation rental, you can therefore consider whether you want to focus primarily on a driving tour of the bridges, nature experiences, or culture and regional events.

Covered Bridges and History

The eight preserved covered bridges of Preble County can be explored by car. Along the way, the route passes through farmland, meadows, gently rolling hills, and valleys. A total of 29 covered bridges were built in the county between 1829 and 1896. The Roberts Covered Bridge is Ohio’s oldest surviving covered bridge and also the oldest covered bridge in the United States with two lanes for vehicle traffic.

The individual structures also each have their own distinctive features. The Brubaker Covered Bridge was built in 1887 and is 88 feet long; its sides were opened to give motorists better visibility. The Christman Covered Bridge was built over Seven Mile Creek in 1895 and named after local landowner Solomon Christman. In Hueston Woods State Park, the Hueston Woods Covered Bridge spans Four Mile Creek for 108 feet and features covered walkways for pedestrians.

Nature Between Lake, Wetland, and Valley

Hueston Woods State Park is located in both Butler County and Preble County and surrounds 625-acre Acton Lake. Opportunities there include hiking, fishing, and canoeing. Those who want to compare different types of landscapes will find walking trails and the Sandpiper wetland at the Allen & Adaline Garber Nature Center. Tours of the farmhouse are available by advance reservation.

Devils Backbone offers additional nature experiences, including walking trails, activities along the creek, and fossil hunting. The Rush Run Wildlife Area covers 1,174 acres and offers public opportunities for hunting and fishing. Its landscape includes steep slopes in the valley of Rush Run Creek. The Woodland Trails Wildlife Area is a state wildlife area operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. These different options can help you decide whether to include trails, water, fossils, or protected natural areas in your trip.

Culture, Recreation, and Regional Tastes

The grounds of the Preble County Historical Society include an original 1860s farmhouse, an 1813 log cabin, a bank barn, and an 1855 smokehouse. Seven walking trails complement the site. The outdoor grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. At Preble Arts, you can try “Paint Your Own Pottery”; the staff will help you choose your glaze colors.

The G & J Kartway, a WKA Master racing track, also provides variety. It began in 1958 as a 1/7-mile dirt track and was paved in 1962. At Camden’s Black Walnut Festival, more than 120 vendors await you each year on the third weekend of October. The Eaton Early Bird Farmers Market offers fresh produce and baked goods. Olde Schoolhouse Vineyard & Winery has more than 20 carefully crafted wines and a tasting room.

Choose the Right Base for Your Trip

A vacation rental in Preble County is suitable as a starting point for an itinerary that combines historic structures, nature, and regional experiences. Before searching, decide which priorities should shape your days: a drive along the covered bridges, activities at Acton Lake, walking trails and wetlands, or events and local specialties. For further orientation within the area, you can also consider New Paris, West Alexandria, and Eaton. This keeps your choice of accommodation closely connected to the type of vacation you want to experience in Preble County.
