Mount Gilead: Discover history and recreation
Accommodation in Mount Gilead
A half-timbered house built in 1829, a permanently displayed Victory Shaft, and a log cabin that offers a glimpse of the 1830s: Mount Gilead offers several specific points of interest for a stay focused on local history. There is also the Morrow County Fair, recreational activities at the Recreation Center, and trails in the state park to the east. This lets you consider culture, events, and outdoor activity as different focuses for your trip.
The town square and local history
The Morrow County Historical Society History Center is located at the southwest corner of Mount Gilead’s square. The Victory Shaft is on permanent display there. The History Center is open Sundays from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., from April through November. If you want to plan your visit around it, these hours provide a specific point of reference.
The Victory Shaft stands in the center of North Square. Mount Gilead’s two public squares still exist today. The History Center and the location of the shaft thus offer distinct historical points of reference in the townscape, without needing to treat them as the same place.
Half-timbered house and log cabin
Built in 1829, the Cross House is the last of the five half-timbered houses from that period still standing in Mount Gilead. The house contains furnishings dating from the late 19th century through 1930. This brings together two different periods: the year the house was built and the later period represented by its furnishings. The Cross House is open for special events and celebrations, as well as by appointment. Keep these conditions in mind when planning a visit.
The Garverick Log House is located on the Morrow County Fairgrounds and offers a glimpse of the 1830s. It is open during Morrow County Farm Days, held annually on the first full weekend in August. If you want to see the log cabin, you can take this fixed annual date into account when deciding when to travel.
Events and activities
The Morrow County Fair is a family tradition in Mount Gilead. It invites people to exhibit, take part, or attend. Alongside the historic houses, it provides another reason to plan your trip around an event.
For outdoor activity, Mount Gilead State Park lies east of town along Route 95. It has six multi-use trails suitable for hiking and running, one of which is an equestrian trail. In town, the Mount Gilead Recreation Center has a large swimming pool as well as basketball and tennis courts. These offerings are quite different: the park focuses on trails for outdoor activities, while the Recreation Center offers swimming and court sports.
