Mercer County combines impressive history with the expansive waters of Grand Lake St. Marys. Those planning a trip centered on culture, nature, and shared activities will find a variety of options here: historic museums and memorial sites, lakeside experiences, cycling and hiking trails, and parks for more relaxed hours. When choosing your vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine the focus you want for your trip.

Experience History at Specific Locations

Fort Recovery represents the history of the Northwest Indian War. Two battles took place here, in 1791 and 1794. The Fort Recovery Museum displays artifacts from both battles and two reconstructed 18th-century blockhouses. In addition, a self-guided tour with 15 information panels leads across the battlefield. Another option is the scheduled guided outdoor tour of the battlefield, which takes place on the second Sunday of each month from May through October.

A prominent memorial is the Fort Recovery Monument. The obelisk is 101 feet 4 inches tall; beneath its base are the remains of some of the people killed in the two battles. Those who prefer to explore historical connections through exhibits can include the Maria Stein Heritage Museum in their itinerary. Six galleries there present the early settlement of the southern parts of Auglaize and Mercer Counties in Ohio, as well as the lives of the predominantly German-descended and Roman Catholic settlers from the mid- to late 19th century.

The cultural offerings also include Relic Chapel, home to one of the largest collections of relics in the United States, and the Riley, Calvin E., House, also known as the Mercer County Historical Museum. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Rockford Historical Museum is located at 151 Columbia St. in Rockford, Ohio. In the broader regional context, the Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches also shapes the character of western Ohio; its center is near Maria Stein in Mercer County, where large Catholic churches define the character of the region.

Grand Lake St. Marys as a Center for Water and Nature

Mercer County is home to the largest inland lake in Ohio. Grand Lake St. Marys State Park has 52 miles of shoreline, access for boating and fishing, a family campground, a swimming pool, and picnic areas. Five state-operated boat ramps, along with additional private ramps at marinas, make it easier to plan a day on the water. Lakeshore Marina offers boat slips, boat rentals, a campground, and a store for everyday necessities.

The lake's origins are also unusual: Grand Lake St. Marys was originally created as a hand-dug feeder reservoir for the Miami & Erie Canal. For a more active outdoor stay, Franklin Township maintains a 6.5-mile bike path from South Shore Zuma Park to Strasburg Nature Park. Baker Woods State Nature Preserve combines forests and wetlands; wildflowers can be seen there in spring, and the preserve is also suitable for birdwatching.

Which Base Suits Your Trip

Choosing accommodation with a focus on history is a good fit for days spent visiting museums, monuments, and regional cultural sites. If water, fishing, or boating are the main priorities, you should focus your search more closely on a stay around Grand Lake St. Marys. For a varied trip, lake experiences can be combined with the bike path or a visit to the nature preserve, without every day's itinerary having to follow the same rhythm.

For shared activities with children, the parks in Celina offer additional options. The park system includes five parks totaling more than 124 acres and offers, among other things, boat docks, playgrounds, a skate park, cycling and hiking trails, sports fields, and restrooms. As an additional stop, Celina can also be included in your travel plans. In July, Taste of Celina brings a block party with a car show to downtown Celina. Offerings include specialties from local restaurants as well as beer and wine tastings.
